SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson the students
should be able to;
a. Identify the different hand tools used
for metalwork,
b. Describe metalwork hand tools,
c. Care and maintain metalwork hand
tools.
INTRODUCTION
Metalwork hand tools can be
categorised as marking out tools,
measuring tools, driving tools and
cutting tools.
MARKING OUT TOOLS
These are tools used to mark the work piece before
carrying out other operations like cutting, drilling,
etc. Examples of marking out tools are;
1. Scriber: It is used to scratch lines on a work
piece. It is made of steel.
2. Surface plate: It is used as a surface for marking
out and measuring work piece. It is made of
malleable cast iron and it has a flat surface.
3. Odd leg caliper: It is also called Jenny’s caliper. It
is used to determine the centre of a round bar.
4. Punch: It is used to mark the centre of a point or
to mark the centre of a hole before drilling.

MEASURING TOOLS AND
GAUGES
These are tools used to measure distances or
angles on a metal work piece before any
operation is carried out. They are;
1. Steel rules: These are steel metals graduated in
metres, centimetres, inches, or millimetres used
to measure the length on a metal work piece.
2. Veneer calipers: These are used to measure
objects by adjusting their moveable jaws to the
object faces.
3. Micrometer screw gauge: It is used to measure
the thickness of very thin metal sheets and
wires.
4. Protractor: It is used to mark off angles on a
metal work piece.

DRIVING TOOLS
a. Spanners: These are tools used for
loosening or tightening bolts and nuts.
Examples of spanners are open
spanner, box spanner, combination
spanner, socket spanners
b. Screwdrivers: These are used to drive
screws into a metal
c. Hammers: These are used to drive
nails and screws into a metal sheet.

CUTTING TOOLS
a. Files: These are hand tools with a rough
surface used for the removal of metal
materials or making them smooth.
Examples of files are; hand files, flat files,
half round files, round files, triangular files.
b. Chisels: These are used for cutting metals.
These are mainly classified as cold and hot
chisels. Examples are flat, cross cut,
diamond point and half round chisel.
c. Saws: These are used to cut metals usually
clamped on a vice. Examples of saws used
for metalwork include hacksaw, piercing
saw and back saw.
