-Reverse Osmosis :-

Reverse osmosis technique was used for the treatment of industrial waste water.
Ions like calcium, magnesium, sodium, sulfate, and nitrate were found in the
waste water of the General Company of Vegetable Oil with high concentrations
which must be treated for reuse.
-Osmosis :-

Osmosis is a naturally occurring phenomenon and one of the most important processes
in nature. It is a process where a weaker saline solution will tend to migrate to a strong
saline solution.
-What Is The Reverse Osmosis ?

Reverse Osmosis is the process of Osmosis in reverse. Whereas Osmosis


occurs naturally without energy required, to reverse the process of osmosis
you need to apply energy to the more saline solution.
-How does Reverse Osmosis work?

Reverse Osmosis works by using a high pressure pump to increase the pressure on the
salt side of the RO and force the water across the semi-permeable RO membrane,
leaving almost all (around 95% to 99%) of dissolved salts behind in the reject stream.
-What contaminants will Reverse Osmosis remove from water?

• Reverse Osmosis is capable of removing up to 99%+ of the dissolved salts (ions), particles,
colloids, organics, bacteria and pyrogens from the feed water (although an RO system should
not be relied upon to remove 100% of bacteria and viruses).

• Reverse Osmosis is very effective in treating brackish, surface and ground water for both
large and small flows applications. Some examples of industries that use RO water include
pharmaceutical, boiler feed water, food and beverage, metal finishing and semiconductor
manufacturing to name a few.
-Forward Osmosis :-

• The last decade has witnessed extensive research and technological


achievements in water production and wastewater treatment processes. Also, it
is being realized that water, energy and food are inter-connected – often
expressed as the water-energy-food nexus.

• Forward Osmosis (FO) is one example of a promising membrane process and


potentially a sustainable alternative/supplement to reverse osmosis (RO)
process for wastewater reclamation and sea/brackish water desalination.
-The Forward Osmosis Process :-

• In FO process, the water molecules are drawn from the FS through a semi-permeable
membrane to the DS side (from a lower osmotic pressure to a higher osmotic pressure
side).
-Types Of Draw Solution :-
-FO For Waste Water Treatment :-

• In general, wastewater has lower osmotic pressure and higher fouling propensity. FO
integrated with membrane distillation (MD) process was studied for treatment of
municipal wastewater, where stable water flux was attained in a continuous operation at
the recovery rate up to 80%.
