Meti Worku Dawit lelisa Introduction This case study is concerned about an apartment building (G+8) owned and managed by the organization” Ethiopian women development fund” located in Addis Ababa kirkose sub city worked 09 house no 002 near the area known as Meskel Square. Certain aspects of this apartment building such as the different types of functional spaces, living unit typology, etc. , will be analyzed and discussed in depth Conceptual insight Plans initiated and executed by princess Tenagnewerk H/Selase the building’s construction was completed 1974 . It was intended to be a commemorative for women who has contributed to the development of their country ,presently it’s under the management of “Ethiopian Women’s Development fund”. Site analysis The compound of the building occupies m2 and the built up area is m2 . The site has one central pedestrian entrance and two vehicle entrances place at the north and south perimeter corners of the site with a street access which are effective and functional in adapting to the two way sub-arterial exit street from the site . The building depth(14m) and angel of positioning (450 from EW axis) in relation to the suns trajectory facilitates natural lighting and ventilation simultaneously preventing intense exposure to harsh sun . The elevation level difference from the front to rear of the site which is 5 meters lowest point being at the rear9west end) is adapted by a split level half basement and an exit out is present on level ground . Space transition and sequences Street level public space and the transition from it to the private space of the housing units is achieved by adapting the space in between by a sequence of mixed zones which are semi public or semi private. The podium a commercial zone acts as a buffer for the private space at the same time harbors part of the public space . The semi public space ends at the lobby which is inside the tower where there are semi private and private spaces ,elevators /a star case and flats. Most horizontal and vertical circulations are in compliance with standards and are designed to be naturally lit and ventilated. Interior space functional qualities There are two different spaces to consider which are the podiums and the towers interior space’s . When considering the podium there are 8 units all interior spaces are commercial units with varying functions such as record store ,café ,electronic appliances shop . this units are organized together in a repeating linear pattern with good lighting and ventilation. And in the case of the tower. housing units are organized in corner arrangement with the staircase and elevators are in the middle east to west axis with horizontal circulation hallway lays between them. While avoiding harsh sun the building orientation allows very little lighting to the hallway on floors 1-8. Based on the typical floor plans observed and the site visits it is visible that all wet zones Bath/WC/kitchen are horizontally at close proximity to each other and vertical aligned in order to maintain a good drainage system. There are three Housing units typologies 2 bed room area No of units 1 bed room area No of units Studio area No of units Functional practicality as an urban element
The tower podium form was used to adapt
and utilize the opportunities created by having access to advanced urban amenities Also the building fosters a greater synthesis between the private and the public space thus becoming a part of the city instead of a secluded structure . There are 32 individual housing units integrated in the 8 floors of the buildings tower structure With a floor area of m2 while there are 8commercial unites in the G+0 podium section with a floor area of m2. There is a m2 outdoor parking/common space/playground in the rear of the compound and an island courtyard at the front within the podium structure. Commercial units at the front of the podium have angled walls at 450 to the street creating shaded walkways and street vending corners which titivates the constant flow of pedestrian traffic.
