World Trade Organization

The World Trade Organization (WTO) is the only international organization dealing with the global rules of trade between nations. Its main function is to ensure that trade flows as smoothly, predictably and freely as possible. The organization officially commenced on January 1, 1995, replacing the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), which commenced in 1948.

Current Round of Negotiations

The WTO launched the current round of negotiations, the Doha Development Agenda (DDA) or Doha Round, at the fourth ministerial conference in Doha, Qatar in November 2001. The Doha round was to be an ambitious effort to make globalization more inclusive and help the world's poor, particularly by slashing barriers and subsidies in farming.

WTOs Annual Report 2011 The 2011 WTO Annual Report provides a brief summary of the organization and a detailed review of its activities in 2010. It also includes a personal message from the Director-General, who reflects on the events of 2010 and the challenges that lie ahead. The main part of the Report is divided into the five principal areas of activity of the WTO: Trade negotiations Implementation and monitoring Dispute settlement Building trade capacity Outreach

India to oppose move to put farm tariffs in WTO meet

New Delhi: India will resist any attempt by developed countries to take away the right of World Trade Organization (WTO)-member nations to restrict export of food items and raise import tariffs beyond existing levels. The Doha round of trade talks, launched a decade ago to help poor nations benefit from global trade, is almost paralyzed because of differences between the US and large developing countries such as India, China and Brazil on removal of tariffs on some industrial goods.

WTO NEGOTIATIONS AGRICULTURE AGREEMENT

AGRICULTURE :- INDIA 2011

DEVELOPMENT IN AGRICULTURAL SECTOR

The Agriculture Agreement:

new rules and commitments The objective of the Agriculture Agreement is to reform trade in the sector and to make policies more market-oriented. This would improve predictability and security for importing and exporting countries alike.

The new rules and commitments apply to: market access domestic support export subsidies

AGRICULTURE :- LIVELIHOOD

About 58% of the population still dependent on agriculture for their livelihood, India has a substantial stake in the Agriculture negotiations. India's priority in the Agriculture negotiations has been to safeguard the interests of low income and resource poor agricultural producers, in terms of their food and livelihood security and rural development needs.

DEVELOPMENT IN AGRICULTURAL SECTOR

A substantial and effective reduction in trade-distorting domestic support, the elimination of all forms of agricultural export subsidies and improvements in the transparency and predictability of agricultural trade would be important benchmarks of Doha round. This would level the playing field for farmers in the developing world and enable them to access global markets.

Russias WTO membership to go through

10 November 2011

Russias acceptance as a member of WTO, the World Trade Organization, is virtually assured. The present members of the WTO and Russia reached agreement on Russias membership in negotiations in Geneva

What the US wants:

No money for the green climate fund for now Discuss IPR in TRIPPs and trade issues in WTO alone Have a pledge and review regime based on voluntary measures to keep emission targets low No talk of an agreement which is legally binding But any future deal should be as heavy on India and China as on the US No review of its commitments under a strict regime Have international scrutiny of emerging economies.
