Origin

● At the beginning of the 21st century, French was an official language


of more than 25 countries.

● The first document apparently written in French probably dates


from 842.

● The French-speaking population of Canada is growing relatively


fast, and more than four-fifths of the population of Quebec province
uses French on a daily basis.

● French is still a working language of the UN and the EU as well


as numerous other International Organizations including the
International Labor Organization, Amnesty International, Doctors
without Borders, and the Red Cross.

Do You Know?

● French was not the original language in France:


Before French became the official language of France, the nation spoke Latin.

● No genuine French words start with the letters K and W:


The letters K and W are in the French alphabet but one cannot
find these particular letters in genuine French words.

● Shortest and longest French words:


The French term for thiamine –
aminométhylpyrimidinylhydroxyéthylméthythiazolium is the longest
word however, it is not present in dictionary. It has 49 letters in total.
Oiseau (Bird) is the shortest French word that contains all the vowels.

● Famous classic novels and plays were originally written in French.
