1. use computing devices;
2. use materials on technology that will help
you learn;
3. join in group computing activities; and
4. make projects on the computer with the
help of your teacher.
SECTION 1 Today’s World of Machines
We live in a fast-changing world. Many
changes take place because of machines.
Do you know that the computer is a
machine? It is one of the most important
machines we have. It helps us do many
things.
SECTION 1 Today’s World of Machines

LESSON 1: Machines in Everyday Life

1.Give examples of
different machines and
their uses

2.Explain why machines

are important

LESSON 1: Machines in Everyday Life

Machines in Life
Papa uses the lawnmower. The lawnmower is a machine that cuts
grass.

Mama does laundry on the washing machine. A washing machine

washes clothes by itself.

Watching cartoons on the television is fun. A television is a machine

that shows moving pictures.

There are so many machines around us! Machines make ordinary life
easier and more exciting. Can you imagine life without machines?
SECTION 1 Today’s World of Machines

LESSON 1: Machines in Everyday Life

Life Without Machines

Machines are powerful tools. We use them everyday. We work faster

and better with them. They make life easier and fun. What happens if
one day all our machines are gone?

Papa uses garden scissors to cut grass. He pulls out the weeds
with his hands.

Mama washes all the clothes by hand. It takes too long to wash
them.

LESSON 2: A Machine with Many Uses

Work on the Computer
Have you seen a computer? A computer is also a machine. Like other
machines, it makes our jobs easier. The computer helps us do many things. At
home, we can use it in many ways. In school, they are also very useful.

Fun with the Computer

We can also use computers to have fun!

Get In Touch on the Computer

Computers can be used to talk to other people. You can type and you can use a
microphone and speaker.

Computers are not only for the home. People also
use computers at work. Many kinds of computers
help people with their jobs. Computers help make
their jobs easier.

Interesting Uses of Computers

A pilot uses the computer to fly safely.
He can check the direction his plane is
flying. He can find out if the weather is
safe for flying. He can tell if other planes
are flying in his direction.

A doctor uses the computer to check

if her patient is sick. A special
machine lets her see inside her
patient’s body. The pictures shown by
the computer tell her what is wrong
with the patient.

A computer is really great! It is useful in many

places. Do you know of other uses of our friend
—the computer?
SECTION 2 Getting to Know the Computer

In this section, we will know more about

computers. We will find out that there are
different types of computers. They each
have a different purpose.

LESSON 4: Computers, Big and Small

Mainframe Computer
This type of computer is used by large
companies to service their customers. For
example, ATM machines in the country are
linked to their bank’s powerful mainframe
computers.

Minicomputer
This minicomputer is smaller than a
mainframe. It is larger than the computer you
have at home. It is used by medium-sized
companies. It can store all the data that is
needed by a small company.
SECTION 2 Getting to Know the Computer

LESSON 4: Computers, Big and Small

Microcomputer
The microcomputer is the most common type of
computer. You might have one at home. You also
see many of these in Internet cafés, in your school,
and in most offices. This type of computer is
usually called a desktop personal computer.

Mobile Devices
A mobile device is a very small computer that
can fit in your pocket or that is small enough to
hold in your hand. There are many different
kinds of mobile devices out there.

SECTION 3 The Computer’s Companions

We have already learned the different

ways computers help us. In this section,
we will be introduced to the different
things that are attached to computers.
They help computers become more
useful. We will also learn how these things
are used.

storage devices

2.Explain why we use

storage devices
SECTION 3 The Computer’s Companions
LESSON 7: Like a Shelf

What is Storage?

A computer can remember information we input

with the help of a data storage device. A data
storage device is a peripheral device that can
keep information. Despite its small size, it can
keep a lot of data. You can think of it like a shelf.
You can put your things inside it, then take them
out again when you need them.

SECTION 4 Running the Computer Right
Like all other machines, computers must be
used correctly so that they will last. They
have to be taken care of. In this section, we
will learn how to correctly switch the
computer on and off. We will also learn some
healthful habits when using them.
SECTION 4 Running the Computer Right

1.Show the proper way

of switching a
computer on

2.Show the proper way

of switching a
computer off
SECTION 4 Running the Computer Right

LESSON 8: Computer On, Computer Off

Switching the Computer On
Our computers are usually connected to the
electric outlet by means of a device called an
automatic voltage regulator or AVR. Switch on
the AVR to bring power to your computer unit.

Turn your system unit on. The power switch is

usually located in front of the system unit. It is
often the largest button that you see.

Switching the Computer On

Switch on the monitor so you can
watch your computer start.

After turning on your system unit and

your monitor, your monitor will show a
black screen with words and numbers
on it. This means that the system unit is
starting up.

A colored screen with little
images will then appear. We
call this screen the desktop.
The desktop can also have
pictures or drawings as its
background. We call this
background the wallpaper.
