MEASURES OF

POSITION
STRATEGIC INTERVENTION MATERIALS IN
MATHEMATHETICS 10
• Its a number the tells where the score stands relative to
the others in a set of data.
• It is a measure whether a value is about the average, or
wether its unsually high or low
• It used for quantitative data that falls on some numerical
scale.
• It can be applied to ordinal variables.
2 Different types of data:
UNGROUPED GROUPED
DATA DATA

In the event that there are few This is the case if there are a
and the data does not need to be lot of data. You must create
converted into tabular form. classes and a table.
QUARTILE
Three values that divided the sorted data into four equal-
sized sections of observations each.
QUARTILE
FORMULA:

• First Quartile(Q1) = ((n + 1)/4)th Term

• Second Quartile(Q2) = ((n + 1)/2)th Term
• Third Quartile(Q3) = (3(n + 1)/4)th Term
EXAMPLE
1.Calculate the median, lower quartile, upper quartile,
and interquartile range of the following data set of
values: 20, 19, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 27, 26
2.Calculate the median, lower quartile and upper
quartile of the following data set of values: 1, 2, 8, 4,
5, 7, 10, 15, 11
DECILE
The deciles are the score points which divide a distribution
into ten equal parts
DECILES
FORMULA:

x is the value of the decile that needs to be calculated

and ranges from 1 to 9.
n is the total number of observations in that data set.
Step 1: Arrange the data in increasing order
Step 2: Identify the total number of points
Step 3: Apply the decile formula to calculate the position of
the required data point
Step 4: The value of the decile can be determined as [lower
score + (distance)(higher score - lower score)].
Step 5: Apply steps 3 and 4 to determine the rest of the
deciles.
EXAMPLE
1. Suppose a data set consists of the following
numbers: 24, 32, 27, 32, 23, 62, 45, 80, 59, 63, 36,
54, 57, 36, 72, 55, 51, 32, 56, 33, 42, 55, 30. The
value of the first two deciles has to be calculated.
2. Find the 6th and the 9th decile for the data in the
above-mentioned example.
PERCENTILE
Percentiles are a type of quantiles, obtained adopting a
subdivision into 100 groups.
PERCENTILE
FORMULA:

• n = ordinal rank of the given value or value below the number

• N = number of values in the data set
• P = percentile
The percentile of x is the ratio of the number of values below x to the total number
of values multiplied by 100. the percentile formula is
Percentile = (Number of Values Below “x” / Total Number of Values) × 100
EXAMPLES
1.The scores obtained by 10 students are 38, 47, 49, 58,
60, 65, 70, 79, 80, 92. Using the percentile formula,
calculate the percentile for score 70?
2.The weights of 10 people were recorded in kg as 35,
41, 42, 56, 58, 62, 70, 71, 90, 77. How to find
percentile for the weight 58 kg?
ACTVITY
Direction: Solve for the quartiles using the given formula. The answer will be the
code to open the door for the next question.

1. 58, 57, 56, 58, 59, 58, 58, 55, 58

2. 81, 80, 96, QQ
87, 89, 82, 89, 78, 96, 82
3. 31, 36, 39, 44, 33, 32, 29, 34, 30, 51
