collect adequate amount of urine (half of the container) and
then continue to urinate with the remaining urine to the toilet
bowl.
c) Cover and label the container properly.
Normal Values

Normal Values
Color Yellow-straw
Blood Negative
Sugar (Glucose) Negative
Protein Negative-trace
pH 5.0-8.0
Specific gravity 1.005-1.030
Significance
pH
• It measures the alkalinity and acidity of the urine.
• A neutral pH is 7.0
• The higher the number, the more basic (alkaline) it is.
• Higher than normal may indicate the following conditions: kidney failure,
kidney tubular acidosis, pyloric obstruction, respiratory alkalosis, UTI,
vomiting
• The lower the number, the more acidic it is.
• Lower than normal may indicate the following conditions: acidosis,
dehydration, diabetic ketoacidosis, diarrhea, and starvation.
Significance

Specific gravity

• is a measure of the concentration of solutes (chemical particles) in the urine. It

provides information on the kidneys ability to concentrate urine.
• The higher value indicates dehydration.
Significance

Protein in Urine (Proteinuria or Albuminuria)

• Having protein in the urine could be an early sign of nephrotic syndrome or an

early sign of kidney disease.
• Some of the risk factors for kidney disease are:
• Diabetes
• High blood pressure
• Family history of kidney disease
Significance

Sugar in Urine (Glycosuria)

• This usually occurs in diabetes, especially when untreated.

Blood in Urine (Hematuria)

• Usually isn’t a sign of a major problem, but it could also be a sign of a serious
medical condition.
• It may be due to: bladder infection (cystitis), kidney infection, kidney stones
(associated with severe abdominal or pelvic pain), Ca of the kidney, etc.
Important Precautions

• Collect a freshly voided clean catch urine and use only urine collected within an
hour. Prolonged exposure to room temperature may result in microbial
proliferation.
• The urine container should be cleaned and rinsed well with water.
