Environmental Laws/Acts in India
• Water (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act, 1974;
• Air (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act, 1981,
• Water (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Cess Act, 1977;
• Environment (Protection) Act, 1986;
• Hazardous Wastes (Management & Handling) Rules, 1989;
• Manufacture, Storage & Import of Hazardous Chemicals
Rules, 1989,
• Noise pollution (regulation and control) rules, 2000

Water (Prevention And Control of Pollution) Act

Requirements
• Not to discharge, knowingly, any effluent not conforming to
the standards
• Furnish information to the SPCB of any accident or
unforeseen
event
• Comply with the directions issued in writing by the SPCB
Basics / Fundamentals of ETP
 PRELIMINARY TREATMENT OF EFFLUENT
SCREENS
OIL /GREASE REMOVAL
TRAP FLOW EQUALIZATION

 PUMPS for effluent transfer /lifting.

 PHYSIO-CHEMICAL TREATMENT- Dosing of Treatment chemicals

solutions. CHEMICALS DOSING - Ferrous Sulphate, PAC, Lime, Poly-
electrolyte. FLASH MIXERS AND FLOCULATION TANKS-Tanks fitted
with mixers.
Effluent and treatment chemicals solutions react resulting in chemical reaction,
which remove colour, TSS, COD and BOD etc.
SETTLING- Tube settlers with hopper bottom (without scraper).

BIOLOGICAL TREATMENT-
FILTRATION -Pressure FILTERS –Single /Dual Media (DMF), ACF .
CHLORINATION / Disinfection - to kill the bacteria/residual colour.
SLUDGE DEWATERING- Filter Press. Do not provide SDB, not adequate.

Screens
If not cleaned properly & regularly, then
 Freqent chocking / clogging of pumps & pipe line.
 Overflow thru' inlet drains / screen chamber
 Shock loading on further treatment units.

Screenings Removal & Disposal.

OUTLET Solid Waste

Grit Removal & Disposal (Rarely required in ETPs)

Solid Waste
If not removed, then
 May cause excessive wear & tear / abrasion to mechnical
equipments particularly - pumps.
 May reduce effective capacity of treatment units.
PHYSICO – CHEMICAL TREATMENT
Process
Dosing
Tanks Need / Necessity
 To remove visible pollutants e.g. colour
from textile / other effluents, SS etc.
 To remove Heavy Metals / Toxic compounds
To Clarifier / so as to make fit for biological treatment or

Operational and Performance Parameters
 OPERATIONAL Parameters-
pH, Temperature, Flow rate (Litres /hr.) -
actual vs.
designed.

 PERFORMANCE Parameters-
pH, BOD, TSS, COD, Oil/ Grease, TDS and other

specific parameter such as Total Chromium,

Phenolic
compounds
and detergent .
Chemicals Dosing and Consumption in
Physico- Chemical Treatment
 Chemicals used- in solution form
Ferrous Sulphate / Ferric Alum / PAC,
Hydrated Lime
(powder) , Poly-electrolyte
(PE).
 Quantities- depend on
colour concn. in
untreated
effluent.
Fer. Sulphate / Fer. Alum

Emergency Response Plan of ETP
Document Standard operating procedure for Emergency
Response Plan of ETP

Objective Proper planning to save Human Beings and

Environment from Natural, Expected or Unexpected
situation

Department General Maintenance, ETP and Washing

Scope Safety, Discharge water, no proper treatment, careless

run the ETP, Not maintain the Standard

Emergency Co-ordinator Mr. JAGAT SINGH

Safety Officer Mr. RAMESH KUMAR
ETP Operator Mr. ASHOK DAS
Rescue Team Maintenance/Washing/Security
Emergency Response Plan of ETP
S.No. Reason Response Plan

1 Excess Discharge of To clear the drain line every time, and proper design to not
raw water more than overflow the drain water.
the drainage limit

2 Overdosing of the Washing in charge use the chemical as per the recipe and
chemical take care no any employee use over chemical then the
recipe.

3 Mud pump not Must be a spare pump for running of ETP, and change the
working/breakdown pump on breakdown.

4 Overflow of Raw -Raw Water collection have capacity to store the More
Water Collection Tank capacity to discharge the washing water
-Daily raw water should be treated on daily basis and so that
water collection tank have less water.
In case of emergency beyond the control water tank
overflow and cross the 90% of tank limit, then to stop the
washing for that time and call the septic tanker to suck the
water and send to our sister concern approved unit from
pollution board to treat the raw water and discharging.

1 ETP not functioning -In case of ETP Failure , We send the waste water to our
sister concern factory Shivalik Prints Ltd. Plot no. 48, Sector-
06 and Plot no. 7, sector 06 for treatment.

2 In case of power out -In case of Powerout, then to stop the washing for that time
in ZLD and call the septic tanker to suck the water and send to our
sister concern approved unit from pollution board to treat
the raw water and discharging. We send the waste water to
our sister concern factory Shivalik Prints Ltd. Plot no. 48,
Sector- 06 and Plot no. 7, sector 06 for treatment.

3 Absence or illness of -In case operator is not available, other operator will operate
operator the ZLD as per ZLD guidelines & SOP.
