Ilocos Norte the Tuesday before the Ash
Wednesday—the last day for merrymaking
before the start of the Lenten season.
The celebration starts with a ritual called
“Guling.” This word can be translated as
“mark” or “sign.” In the old days, the mayor
of the town smeared people’s foreheads with a white cross made of wet rice
flour.

LA UNION

the town of San Juan is fast becoming the
surfing capital this side of the Philippines.

that have made San Juan earn the title of
surfing capital of the North. San Juan, a

Mango-Bamboo Festival
The Mango-Bamboo Festival is
not just meant to be a festival or
entertainment event. It was called
Mango-Bamboo Festival because
the two products have a greater
chance to compete in the world
market. Reselluelo has a much
nobler vision than entertainment
for holding such a festival.
 MAJOR CULTURAL GROUPS
This region has three distinct groups: Ilocanos,
Pangasinenses and Igorots. Ilocanos occupy the
coastal provinces of Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur and La
Union and certain parts of Pangasinan. The natives of
Pangasinan are the Pangasinenses. There are also
Tingguians who live in the secluded mountains of
Ilocos Sur.
The people are essentially rice producers who also indulge in
extensive agriculture with cash crops like tobacco and garlic. Due
to the limited agricultural potentials in Ilocos, Ilocanos are known
to be thrifty, self-sufficient, and enduring. Outmigration was
caused by dense population pressures in a land with limited
agricultural potentials. It is one of the most densely populated
regions in the country. The agricultural production is not
sufficient to meet local needs thus much of the population went
into the labor market and interregional trade. Tobacco is the
leading cash crop. The textile industry in the area has a long
tradition. Fishing is second only to agricultural production .
 CULTURAL HERITAGE
The Ilocanos have an epic, the Biag ni Lamang
(Life of Lam-ang), which, however, exists only in
the form of a highly hispanicized metrical
romance composed in the nineteenth century.
Ilocos is also the only place in the country where
the Spanish zarzuela (operetta) is still
performed.
 LANGUAGES/DIALECTS SPOKEN

Ilokano, Filipino, and English are predominantly spoken and

understood within the region. Pangasinense, Pangalatok,
Bolinao, and Tagalog are also widely spoken in Pangasinan.
Example of Ilokano words/sentence:

Tagalog-Ilokano
Kumusta ka na?- Kumusta kan?
Maganda ka- Napintas ka
Gwapo ka- Naguapo ka
Agyaman Kami Ti
Panagdengngeg Yo
(Salamat sa pakikinig)
