THE FIVE PILLARS

• THE SHAHADA is the

fundamental statement of faith
and commitment made by
Muslims: “There is no God but
God (Allah), and Muhammad is
His Messenger.” It distinguishes
Muslims from those of other
faiths.
SALAH/ PRAYER

• SALAH is the Arabic term for the

ritual prayer that is obligatory for
Muslims to perform five times a day.
It forms one of the five pillars of
Islam. Prayer is performed in the
direction of Mecca .The ready
knowledge that large numbers of
Muslims will be gathered together for
communal prayer.
ZAKAT (ALMS)
• The term ZAKAT refers to the
obligatory donation of a portion
of a Muslim’s surplus wealth.
Islamic charities encourage
donors to use their services to
relieve suffering and to help
refugees, victims of
environmental disasters, the
urban poor and those in conflict.
• Zakat recipients ;
1.The poor (Al-Fuqara’).
2.The needy (Al- Masakin).
3.The administrators.
4.Those whose hearts are to be reconciled; (new Muslims and the friends of
the Muslim community).
5.Those in bondage (slaves and captives).

7.In the cause of Allah.
8.The wayfarer; (who are stranded on traveling with few resources).

during Ramadan – the ninth month in the Islamic
calendar. During daylight hours (which vary depending
on the time of year in which Ramadan falls), they
abstain from food and drink, sexual activity and
smoking, breaking the fast with a meal after sunset.
Those who are elderly, ill, pregnant or breast-feeding
are exempt, and children are not required to participate.
HAJJ

• Every Muslim whose health and finances permit

it must make at least one visit to the holy city of
Mecca, in present-day Saudi Arabia. The Ka'ba, a
cubical structure covered in black embroidered
hangings, is at the center of the Haram Mosque in
Mecca (fig. 2). Muslims believe that it is the
house Abraham (Ibrahim in Arabic) built for God,
and face in its direction (qibla) when they pray.
Since the time of the Prophet Muhammad,
believers from all over the world have gathered
around the Ka'ba in Mecca on the eighth and
twelfth days of the final month of the Islamic
calendar.
