PUBLICATION
• Rizal finished the novel on February 21,1887
• The first half of the Noli me Tangere was written in
Madrid,Spain from 1884-1885 while he was studying
for medicine.
• While in Germany,he wrote the Second half of the Noli
Me Tangere.
• Jose Rizal Finished the last section of the Novel in Berlin

Inspiration of Rizal for Writing the novel
• Jose Rizal drew his inspiration in writing Noli
from a book entitled “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” which
was authored by Harriet Beacher Stowe. Uncle
Tom’s Cabin is about the life of Negro slaves
under the hands of powerful white Americans.
OBJECTIVES OF RIZAL FOR WRITING THE NOVEL
•to defend Filipino people from foreign accusations of foolishness

and lack of knowledge;
•to show how the Filipino people lives during Spanish colonial
period and the cries and woes of his countrymen against abusive
officials;
•to discuss what religion and belief can really do to everyday lives;
and
•to expose the cruelties, graft, and corruption of the false
government at honestly show the wrongdoings of Filipinos that led
to further failure.
SOCIAL IMPACT OF THE NOVEL
•Noli Me Tangere is considered to be romantic but is more

socio-historical because of its nature. Most of the issues
discussed in Noli can still be seen today.
•After publication, Noli me Tangere was considered to be
one of the instruments that initiated Filipino nationalism
leading to the 1896 Philippine Revolution.
•The novel did not only awaken sleeping Filipino
awareness, but also established the grounds for aspiring to
independence.
• Catholic leaders in the Philippines at the time
regarded the book as heretical, while Spanish colonial
authorities declared it as subversive and against the
government.
•The impact also included the expulsion of Rizal’s clan
in Calamba, Laguna. Extradition cases were filed
against him. This led to his decision to write the sequel
of Noli Me Tangere, the El filibusterismo.

• She also portrayed as a faithful sweetheart, a good friend
and an obedient daughter. Related to Rizal’s childhood

Capltán Tiago (Don Santiagode los Santos)
• Filipino businessman and the cabeza de barangay or head of
barangay of the town of San Diego.
• He is also the known father of María Clara.
• He is also said to be a good Catholic, friend of the Spanish
government and was considered as a Spanish by colonialists.
• He symbolizes the rich Filipinos who oppress their fellow
country men
Padre Dámaso (Dámaso Verdolagas)
• A Franciscan friar and the former parish curate of San Diego.
• He is best known as a notorious character who speaks with
harsh words and has been a cruel priest during his stay in the
town.
• He is the real father of María Clara and an enemy of
Crisóstomo’s father, Rafael lbarra.
• He raped Doña Pia, Maria Clara’s mother.
• He symbolizes the Spanish friars of Rizal’s time.
Elias
• Ibarra’s mysterious friend and ally. Elias made His first
appearance as a pilot during a picnic of Ibarra and María
Clara and her friends.
• He Wants to revolutionize the country and to be Freed from
Spanish oppression.
• He distrust human judgments and prefers God’s Judgment
instead.
• He said to be the personification of Andres Bonifacio.
• He represents the common Filipino.
Filosofo Tacio(Pilosopo Tasyo) /Don Anastacio
• Seeking for reforms from the government, he Expresses his ideals in paper
written in a cryptographic Alphabet similar from hieroglyphs and Coptic
figures Hoping “that the future generations may be able toDecipher it and
realized the abuse and oppression Done by the conquerors.
• The educated inhabitants of San Diego labeled him as Filosofo Tacio (Tacio
the Sage) while others called him As Tacio el Loco (Insane Tacio) due to his
exceptional Talent for reasoning.Rizal can relate to his older brother,
Paciano RizalHe symbolizes the learned Flipino.
Narcisa
• The deranged mother of Basilio and Crispín.
• Described as beautiful and young, although she loves her
children very much, she can not protect them from the
beatings of her husband, Pedro.
• Personified the suffering of the motherland.
• Named after Rizal's older sister, Narcisa.
Crispin
• Sisa’s 7-year-old son. An altar boy, he was Unjustly accused
of stealing money from the Church.

him.
Basilio
• Sisa’s 10-year-old son.

Padre Hernando de la Sibyla
• A Dominican friar. He is described as short and has fair skin.
• He is instructed by an old priest in his order to watch Crisóstomo lbarra.
• He is often cool and intelligent, especially when correcting the other friar,
Padre Damaso, of the latter’s ostentatiousness.
• Symbolizes the liberal friar but would rather stay in the background rather
than incur the wrath of other priests in power.
• He is aware of the injustices done to the natives but would not do anything
to change it, as all he cares about is getting his congregation in power.
