The Investigatory Process and Matter

This document discusses the scientific method and the investigatory process. It explains that the scientific method is a systematic process used by scientists to investigate problems and acquire knowledge about the world. The scientific method consists of 7 key steps: 1) making an observation, 2) asking a question, 3) developing a hypothesis, 4) designing an experiment, 5) collecting data, 6) analyzing results, and 7) drawing a conclusion. The document provides details about each step of the scientific method and gives an example of how it could be applied to investigate a hypothetical problem.

CHAPTER 1:

The Investigatory Process and

Matter
To start this year of learning more about
science, this unit will focus on the investigatory
process and the diversity of materials in the
environment.
This unit also includes experiments that will
enable you to observe these different changes in
materials that are available in your own
communities.
What is Science?
• The word science comes from the Latin word
SCIENTE or SCIENTIA, which means "knowledge".
The word is used to refer to the system of
knowledge that covers GENERAL TRUTHS or the
operation of GENERAL LAWS.
Have you ever wonderred how scientist find answers to their
questions?
How do they find solutions to the problems they encounter?
- Scientist used a step by step procedure in solving problems.. This
procedure is called a scientific method. Scientific method is a way of
solving problems. It is a systematic way of acquiring knowledge and
solving problems about the world around us.
It is like a recipe that you follow to come up with delicious food.
We can use scientific method to understand our world even better.

The scientific method is also known as the Investigatory Process.

• A scientific method is consist of 7 components or steps.
1. MAKE AN OBSERVATION
- Observation is the process getting information around you.
WHAT DO YOU USE TO OBSERVE THE THINGS AROUND YOU?
What possible observation can you make?
After making an observation, the next step is
2. ASKING A QUESTION from your
observation
Your question shall lead you to a problem.
A problem is a question that you want to
solve or the things you want to discover.
One of the question that you can ask from our observation a while ago..
The next step that we need to do is to 3. FORMULATE A
HYPOTHESIS from our question.
A Hypothesis is an educated guess, a tentative answer or a
potential answer to the question or to the problem asked.
The hypothesis must be stated in such the way that it can be
tested through an experiment and shall contain variables.
VARIABLES are the factors or the parameters that we
controlled changed or measured in a an experiment.
A hypothesis will also serve as your guide in designing your
experiment.
A hypothesis will also written in the "IF-THEN" format
The hypothesis or the possible answer of our question earlier is
The next step that we need to do is to verify our
hypothesis. To test if the hypothesis is correct or not.
We need to design develop and conduct an
experiment.
An EXPERIMENT is a series of tests used to verify the
hypothesis.
Your experiments shall contain all the variables
involved in it.
VARIABLES are the measureable characteristic or
parameters that can be modified or changed in an
experiment.
There are 3 types of variables:
Independent, Dependent and Controlled.
A. Independent variable
An independent variable is a variable that represents a
quantity that is being manipulated in an experiment.
B. Dependent variable
A dependent variable represents a quantity whose value
depends on how the independent variable is manipulated.
C. Controlled Variable
A controlled variable or constant variable is a variable that
does not change during an experiment.
Now let us elaborate these 3 variables.
For our example we want to test our hypothesis earlier which is:
Aside from variables your experiment should
also contain the materials and the
procedures that you are going to use.
The experiment should be repeated SEVERAL
TIMES make sure that the first result is not
just an accident.
The next part is recording the data and analyzing
the result.
This step is where you will report, interpret and
explain what happened in your experiment.
You can use charts and graphs in presenting your
Data and result to make it easier to visualize for
your audience.
Data are the information that you gathered In
your experiment
Next part of the scientific experiment is drawing a
conclusion.
Conclusion is the summary of results You gathered in
your experiment.
This will give you an answer if your hypothesis is
correct or not.
If the hypothesis is correct This may be the answer to
your problem If not you need to repeat the experiment
Or think of a new approach to improve your procedure.
You can go back to the first step if needed.
For our example the possible conclusion is.
Based on the statement we can say that our hypothesis
After making a conclusion the next step is to
communicate the results.
You need to inform others about the results of your
experiment.
Professional scientist published the result of their
experiment through Scientific journals presenting Using
a poster Or presented at a conference
You can also present your findings just like the scientist
Those are the components of a scientific methods.
