Kinds Of Adverbs

ADVERB?
• It is a word that modifies verb, adjective, another
adverb or even a whole sentence.
• They can come either before or after the word they
modify.
• Adverbs of Manner
- Tell us the manner or way in which something happens.
They answer the question “HOW?”. Adverbs of manner mainly
modify verbs.
• Examples: He walks slowly. (How does he walk?
slowly) The adverb slowly modifies the verb walks.
They danced gracefully.
(How did they dance?gracefully)
The adverb gracefully modifies the
verb danced.
• Adverbs of Place
- Tell us the place where something happens. They answer
the question “where?”. Adverbs of Place mainly modifies
verbs.
• Examples: They looked everywhere.
(Where did they look? everywhere)
The adverb everywhere modifies the verb looked.
• Adverbs of Time
- Tell us something about the time that something happens.

• Examples: She came yesterday.


(When did she come? yesterday)
The adverb yesterday modifies the verb came.

• Adverbs of Frequency
- are adverbs of time that answer the questions “ HOW
FREQUENT?” or “How often?”.
- They tell us how often something happens.
• Examples: Her father drinks wine occasionally.
(how often does her father drink wine? occasionally)
The adverb occasionally modifies the verb drinks.
 She seldom reads newspapers
(How often does she read newspaper? seldom)
• Adverbs of Degree/Intensity
- Tell us the degree or extent to which something happens.
- They answer the question “HOW MUCH?” or “to what
extent?”.
•Examples: The summer break is absolutely exciting.
(How much exciting the summer break? absolutely)
The adverb absolutely modifies the adjective
exciting.
 She entirely agrees with him.
(How much does she agree with him? entirely)
The adverb entirely modifies the verb agrees.
