Types and Management of Common Mental Disorders

What is mental
illness or disorder?
MENTAL ILLNESS OR DISORDER
 It is an emotional disturbance, which affects the
way an individual thinks, feels, and behaves
making it difficult to live a
normal life.
 It may be organic or functional.
What are the
causes of mental
disorders?
There are factors, situations or events that may
cause, trigger or contribute to mental disorders.
They may be any or all of the following:
1. SOCIAL AND
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS
 These include life situations
and experiences such as
problems and unpleasant
events like family health
problems, parental
problems, financial
difficulties, school-related
problems, among others.
2. PSYCHOLOGICAL
FACTORS
 These include situations
that may have caused
severe mental and
emotional trauma such
as abuse, loss of a loved
one, neglect, rejection,
and related factors.
3. BIOLOGICAL
CONDITIONS
 These includes
heredity, brain
injury, infections
causing mental
illness, and even
poor nutrition.
What are the early
signs and
symptoms of
mental illness?
1. disturbed sleep for a prolonged period
2. prolonged
headache
3. restlessness
and irritability;
being talkative,
depressed and
suspicious
4. easily gets tired and becoming unproductive
5. impaired
memory
6. isolating self from family
and friends
What are some of
the different
mental disorders?
1. MOOD DISORDERS
 It is also referred to
as affective
disorders.
 These are conditions
impacting mood
and related
functions.
Moods range from constant feeling of sadness
or periods of overly happy, or back and forth
extreme happiness to extreme sadness.
 MOOD DISORDERS may
change sleeping and
eating patterns.
 It can prohibit a person
from functioning
normally.
 The most common mood
disorders are depression
and bipolar disorder.
A. DEPRESSION
This is a common but
serious mental
disorder that causes
people to lose
pleasure or interest.
People suffering from depression also experience
intense anxiety, negativity, helplessness, and
hopelessness. Depression can happen to anyone.
SOME SIGNS OF DEPRESSION
 loss of energy and tiredness
 unable to concentrate or focus
 loss of self-confidence and self-
esteem
 loss of energy and
tiredness
 loss of enjoyment on
usually pleasurable or
interesting things
 avoiding people even
close friends
 helpless and hopeless
 difficulty in getting
sleep
 intense feelings of
guilt or worthlessness
 finding it hard to
function at
work/school
 sadness and anger
 restlessness
 thinking of suicide
and death
Don't hesitate to seek help
when you observe these
signs, especially when there
are some things bothering
you. Depression does not go
away on its own you need to
do something about it!
How can you fight
depression?
Get plenty of exercise.
Have proper nutrition
Identify
troubles, but
do not dwell
on them.
Express
yourself.
List your
strengths and
review them.
Talk with an adult-
parents or
guardians, teacher,
coach, school
counselor.
B. BIPOLAR DISORDER
This is also known as MANIC-
DEPRESSIVE DISORDER.
It is a mental condition
characterized by severe high
and low moods.
It brings changes in sleep,
energy, thinking, and behavior.
People with this disorder
experience emotional highs
(HYPOMANIA) or feeling of
overexcitement and confidence,
and low or mild symptoms
(DEPRESSION) or feeling of
extreme sadness.
2. SCHIZOPHRENIA  It is a serious
mental
disorder that
greatly affects
how a person
thinks, feels,
and acts.
 Individuals with this disorder may appear
desperate and withdraw into a world of
imagination.
 They have difficulty distinguishing what is
real and what is just a product
of their imagination.
3. OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER (OCD)
 It is an anxiety disorder where the person
experiences recurring obsessions and
compulsions.
 A person with this disorder has uncontrollable
thoughts and the urge to
do something repeatedly.
People with OCD normally recognize their
obsessions as abnormal but still behave the
same.
Example: Juan has
recurring thoughts of
keeping things in perfect
order. He then feels the
urge to keep checking and
arranging these things to
make sure they are in
perfect order. Juan does
these things because he
worries too much that the
things are not in order.
4. OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE PERSONALITY
DISORDER (OCPD)
 It is a chronic and non- adaptive behavior of
dealing with other people
and life changes.
 Some think that their behavior
is perfectly normal even if it is
beyond strict order and rules.
 People with OCPD have an
excessive need for
perfection and control
over all aspect of his or her
environment.
Example: Juan wants
everything around
him to be in perfect
order. Juan then
expect other people
around him to
conform with the
standard he set for
the desire to achieve
perfection.
What are the
preventive
measures against
mental disorders?
Immunization Engage in
Foster closer against diseases
leadership
family leading to physical
training and
relationship. and mental
disabilities. skills training.
 Share home for
children who are
abused, unwanted,
abandoned, and
maltreated.
 They need love of
parents, food and
shelter, social
exposure, and
spiritual guidance.
 Provide timely guidance for untoward crisis like
attempts to suicide and inflicting harm to others
due to alcoholism or drug abuse.
 Encourage young
individuals to
engage in community
activities.

TYPES OF MENTAL DISORDER

individual with this disease has difficulty
determining what is real and what isa
product of imagination.

3. This is one form of mood disorder which is
characterized by severe high and low moods and
brings changes in sleep, energy, thinking, and
behavior.
4. This is a mental disorder in which an individual
has an excessive need for perfection and control
over all aspect of his or her environment.
5. This is a common but serious mental disorder
that causes people to lose pleasure or interest.
