Tribes & Ethnic Groups
Luzon
-is the largest and most popular island in the
 .
Philippines. Located in the northern portion of the
Philippines Archipelago

it is the economic and political center of the


nation, being home to the country's capital
city, Manila, as well as Quezon City the country's most
populous city. 

Here are the different tribes and ethnic groups of luzon

Kankana-ey

Indigenous people of western


Mountain Province, northern
Benguet and southeastern llocos
Sur and part of the collective group
known as the gorot people.

Tingguians

The mountain-dwelling people of


Abra, Ilocos Sur and llocos Norte.

The religion of the Tingguians revolves


around beliefs pertaining to creation
and superstitions centering around the
anito.

Bontoc
A feared war-like group of
indigenous people who
actively indulged in tribal
wars with its neighbours until
the 1930s.

Kalinga, Limos
They had a reputation for
being “the strong people
of the Cordilleras’.

The word “kalinga” which


originated from the Gaddang
and Ibanag languages, means
“headhunter”,

Gaddang

They once comprised a large group in


the Cagayan Valley region and are
mostly found in Central Isabela, Nueva
Vizaya, Quirino, and Cagayan.

They're known by other names such


as the Gadan, Gaddanes, Iraya, and
Irraya, meaning “upriver”.

Visayas

-Are one of the three principal geographical divisions


of the Philippines, along with Luzon and Mindanao.
Located in the central part of the archipelago, it
consists of several islands, primarily surrounding the
Visayan Sea, although the Visayas are also considered
the northeast extremity of the entire Sulu Sea.

Hiligayon

They are often referred to as


Ilonggo, a subgroup of the
Visayan people whose primary
language is the Hiligaynon
language.

Hiligaynon culture is part of th«


wider Visayan ethnic group,
who constitute one of the
largest Filipino ethnic groups.

Bantoanon
“People from Banton (Island
reside mostly in Odiongan, *
Corcuera, Calatrava, and
Concepcion in Romblion, in th
MIMAROPA region.

They speak Asi, a Visayan


language that is lexically

similar to the language of


Romblomanon.

Kinaray-a
They are concentrated in the
provinces of Antique and
lloilo. Hiligaynon, the
language of the llonggos, was
derived from the Kinaray-a language,

Mamanwa
They are found in Agusan del Norte,
Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur,
Panaoan Island, and in the mountains of
Southern Leyte.
The Mamanwan dialect is bordered on the
North and east by suriganon: on the west by
a mixed vernacular of Surigaonon and
Cebuanon: on the Southwest by Buluanon:
and on the southeast by Bislig Kamayo.

Sama, Abaknon
They are found in the San Bernardino
Strait and Capul
Island of Northwest Samar.
The family to which the language
belongs is Sama: the people
Are called Abaknon.

Mindanao
-is the second-largest island in the Philippines, after
Luzon, and seventh-most populous island in the
world. Located in the southern region of the
archipelago, the island is part of an island group of
the same name that also includes its adjacent islands,
notably the Sulu Archipelago. According to the 2020
census, Mindanao has a population of 26,252,442
people, while the entire island group has an estimated
population of 27,021,036 according to the 2021
census.

Iranun (Illanun)

The word “Lanun” means ptrate;


they were known as the fiercest
pirates in the Malay world. They
marauded the coastal villages.
Ilana Bay is named after them
and they are related to the
Maranao.

Manobo

“Manobo’ is the hispanicized


form of “Manuvu,” which
means “people.”
They are the largest ethnic group in
the Philippines .Their subgroups
include theHigaonon and the Atta.

T’boli

Their culture center falls in the central part


of a triangle whose points are the towns of
Surallah,‘Polomolok and Kiamba
Within this triangle are three major lakes:
Lake Sebu, Lake Lahit and Lake Selutan.

Mansaka

They are the most dominant


ethnic group in Compostella
Valley Province.
They are said to have lived in the
area since the time when
Magbabaya created them.

Maranao
“People of the Lake” referring to the
indigenous people who occupied the lands
around Lake Lanao whose principal town
is Marawi City.
They are part of the largest Moro
ethnic group.

Personal Reflection

Indigenous people were able to live their own lives because of their
culture and language, which served as their identity cards. Their
spiritual values and traditionshad given people the ability to fight
colonialism that was still around today. Indigenous peoples must not
surrender.but they must defend their sacred life on earth.
