1. Identify substances that are solid, liquid,
gas.
2. Describe the properties of solids, liquids and
gases.
3. Explain how temperature affects states of
matter.

Outcomes
Keywords:
• Substance – A matter that has specific composition and properties.

• State – Distinct forms in which matter can exist.

• Particle – A very small form of matter.

What do you know about solids,
liquids, and gases?
Do you know any examples?

What is it –
SOLID LIQUID GAS?
States of matter
• Matter is anything that has mass
and volume (takes up space).
• A particle is a small piece of
matter.
• All matter is made up of small
particles and is in one of the
three states; solid liquid or gas.
• Properties = what the material is
like and how it behaves.
Solids
• Have / keep the same shape and volume.
• Cannot be compressed (squashed into a smaller space) or
poured.
Liquids
• Have / keep the same volume, but the
shape can change.
• Cannot be squashed / compressed.
• Can be poured. Mercury is the only liquid
metal.

Liquid particles are already close together, so they

Liquids can be poured. cannot really be compressed.
Gases
• Volume and shape can change.
• Can be compressed (squashed to fit in a smaller space).
• Can expand to fill any closed container they are in.
• Flow like a liquid.

Gas particles can be compressed into

Gases can flow.
a smaller space.
Properties of solid, liquid and gas

Solid Liquid Gas

• Fixed shape. • No fixed shape. • No fixed shape.
• Fixed volume. • Fixed volume. • No fixed volume.
• Difficult to squash. • Difficult to squash. • Easy to squash.
• Do not flow easily. • Flow quite easily. • Flow easily.
• Very dense. • Less dense than solid. • Not dense at all.
