FORMATION OF
HEAVY ELEMENTS
PHYSICAL SCIENCE
MODULE 1
After going through this module, you are
expected to:
1.Explain stellar nucleosynthesis;
2.Describe the different stages of life cycle of a stars;
3.Cite the different heavy elements formed in each
stages of star cycle.
4.Describe how heavier elements formed during
stellar nucleosynthesis and evolution.
2nd Semester (3rd Quarter)
STELLAR
NUCLEOSYNTHESIS:
RISE OF THE STARS

• Scientist believe that the

formation of the universe
began through the
explosion of primordial
atom which happened 13
billion years ago. It is
known as the BIG BANG. It
became a theory that also
explains the continuous
expansion of the universe.
2nd Semester (3rd Quarter)
STELLAR
NUCLEOSYNTHESIS:
RISE OF THE STARS

• Right after Big Bang, protons

and neutrons combined
together and formed light
elements hydrogen and
helium in the process of Big
Bang nucleosynthesis. Other
light elements such as lithium
and berryllium were also
formed during this process.

STELLAR
NUCLEOSYNTHESIS

• “Stellar means star and

the formation of elements
in the center of the star is
called stellar
nucleosynthesis.
• Carl Sagan said that “We
are made of star stuff”

FORMATION OF HELIUM-3

2nd Semester (3rd Quarter)

FORMATION OF
TRITIUM OR
HYDROGEN-3
• Tritium or hydrogen-
3 was produced from
the fusion of two
deuterium nuclei and
a release of a proton.

2nd Semester (3rd Quarter)

FORMATION OF HELIUM-4

• Helium-4 was
also
synthesized
from
deuterium and
helium-3.

2nd Semester (3rd Quarter)

FORMATION OF HELIUM-4

• Helium-
4 was
produced
from the
fusion of
deuterium
and tritium.

2nd Semester (3rd Quarter)

LITHIUM-7 WAS SYNTHESIZED FROM HELIUM-4 AND
TRITIUM

2nd Semester (3rd Quarter)

BERYLLIUM-7 WAS PRODUCED FROM HELIUM-3 AND
HELIUM-4 .

2nd Semester (3rd Quarter)

• Among the light elements formed,
deuterium, helium-3, helium-4,
and lithium-7 were stable.
Beryllium-7 was unstable and
decayed spontaneously to
lithium-7.

TRI ALPHA
PROCESS
• Happens in red
giant stars once
they leave the
stage of main
sequence star.
• This is how the
three Helium-4 are
converted into
Carbon.

- a neutron is added to a seed nucleus

- neutron capture can be SLow process or Rapid
