Profession, professional, autonomy, accountability
and unity

 Profession:
A paid occupation, especially one that involves
prolonged training and a formal qualification.
Example: Nursing, Teaching, Engineering etc.
Professional
Professional:
A professional is a member of a profession or any person who earns a
living from a specified professional activity.

Examples:
 Teacher.

 Technician.

 Laborer.

 Physical.

 Commercial Banker.

 Engineer.

 Lawyer etc.
Autonomy
 Autonomy: In developmental psychology and moral, political,
and bioethical philosophy, autonomy is the capacity to make an
informed, un-coerced decision.
 Autonomous organizations or institutions are independent or self-
governing.
 Example organizations in Peshawar: KMU, LRH etc.
 Another example: A 26-year-old male has been involved in a
high-speed accident, in which he sustained blunt force trauma to
his head as his head hit the front windscreen of his car. He did not
lose consciousness, he is fully responsive and has no indications
of neurological damage. So he is autonomous to take decision for
treatment for himself.
Accountability
 The fact or condition of being accountable.
 Responsibility, answerability, blameworthiness,
liability are the synonyms for accountability.
 Example of accountability is when an employee
admits an error she made on a project. When an
employee is given the task of making sure a project
goes right and knows she will be blamed if it
doesn't, she can also be said to
have accountability for the project.
Unity

 Unity is being together or at one with someone or

something. It's the opposite of being divided. This
is a word for togetherness or oneness. When the
north won the Civil War, it assured the unity of the
United States.
  An example of unity is a bride and groom both
lighting a single candle at the same time with each
of their candles.
Characteristics of professional nurse

 Nursing is not just a job. Being a professional

nurse means the patients in your care must be able
to trust you, it means being up to date with best
practice, it means treating your patients and
colleagues with dignity, kindness, respect and
compassion. It means understanding the NMC code
of conduct.

Relate the code of ethics to professional status

 A code of ethics and professional
conduct outlines the ethical principles that govern
decisions and behavior at a company or
organization. They give general outlines of how
employees should behave, as well as specific
guidance for handling issues like harassment,
safety, and conflicts of interest.
Professional autonomy

 The central element of professional autonomy is the

assurance that individual physicians and nurses have
the freedom to exercise their professional judgment in
the care and treatment of their patients.
 Professional Autonomy is an essential principle of
professional ethics.
 Autonomy is important because we need to make sure
that the patient is actively involved in their diagnosis
and treatment – and not just deferring to their Doctor.
Professional ethics

 Professional ethics are principles that govern the

behaviour of a person or group in a business
environment. Like values, professional
ethics provide rules on how a person should act
towards other people and institutions in such an
environment.
Accountability to professional status

 Accountability can be seen throughout all aspects

of nursing practice, such as: Ensuring/providing
safe, quality care. Delegation. Following (and
questioning) policy and procedures. Practicing
within the guidelines of the Nurse Practice Act.
Maintaining confidentiality. Questioning standard
of care, provider's orders.
Unity and its relationship to professional status in nursing

 Group assignment
 Write a paragraph on unity and its relationship to
professional status in nursing

 Key-point: Doing so will help us to

advance nursing science and enable RNs to make
informed decisions that affect patient care.
Relate Nursing ethics to standards of nursing practice

 Please read the given PDF file to cover this

objective because this objective is the core of ethics
in nursing.
