1.MASS is a sacrament
of the Eucharist mostly
celebrated by the Roman
Catholic Church.
The word “mass” came from the Latin word
missa used in the concluding rite of the mass
in Latin.

The mass in the Philippines is for praising,


thanksgiving, and requesting from God. Songs in
the mass can be played and sung in fast or slow
tempo.
2. PASTORES is a Christmas season
folk dance and song. It reeneacts
how the shepherds visited the child
Jesus in a manger. Through a song
the actors and actresses go from
one house to the other singing the
daygon (worship). They use songs
with happy moods that have a
uniform message.

is a religious play
presented during
the Lenten season.
It portrays happenings
from the Old and New
Testaments of Jesus Christ’s life, suferings and
death. The word “senakulo” came from the
Spanish word “cenakulo”. It is usually played on a
proscenium, the part of the stage that is in front
of the curtain that was called telon.

4. PASYON is a Philippine epic that
narrates about the passion, death
and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The verses are structured in five
stanzas with eight syllables in each
line. Its recitation is known as “pabasa”. It is
commonly sung during Holy Week. The
reading of pasyon is traditional religious
practice in the Philippines and people gather
the reader of the pasyon to listen and reflect.

6. FLORES DE MAYO is a Spanish
term for “Flowers of May”. It is a festival
held in the Philippines in the month of
May and one of the May devotions to the
Blessed Virgin Mary that lasts for the
entire month. It is one of the many
influences of the Spaniards in the
Philippine culture and tradition. It is
usually celebrated by the Catholics and
the Aglipayans.
7. SANTACRUZAN
is a religious celebration throughout the
Philippines. It is the highlight during the
celebration of the Flores de Mayo during the
month of May. It is a colorful May time event
in the Philippines that recalls the finding of the
Holy Cross by Queen Helena with her son,
Emperor Constantine. After the cross was
found in Jerusalem, it was brought back to
Rome, where there was joyful celebration for
thanksgiving.

SECULAR MUSIC
is a nonreligious music.
The word “secular” means “being separate from
religion.” Words are an important part of secular
music. Words were added for most and may common
people to sing songs together for entertainment.
The secular music in the Philippines were influenced
by the Spaniards and the dance music, and art songs
that express their feelings to each other and their
environment.
1. HARANA
– is a serenade traditionally sung
by a man to express his love to
a lady. It is sung with emotion
and usually accompanied by a
guitar. Popular Filipino harana
songs are “ Ang Tangi Kong
Pag-ibig”, “O Ilaw,” And
“Dungawin Mo Hirang.”

2. BALITAW
is a song traditionally associated
with the Visayan region. However,
this type of music is also popular in
the lowland areas of Luzon.
It is a debate or dialogue song in
which a woman and a man
compete to see who is better at
improvising romantic verses. These
verses are sometimes memorized
in advance.

-Originated from Balayan, Batangas. This song is in
triple meter with the themes of love and courtship.
-Nicanor Abelardo was inspired to compose the
“Mutya ng Pasig” in Kumintang tempo.
4. PANDANGGO
Is a dance form that can be found in the
different island of Luzon such as
Batangas, Ilocos, Tarlac, and parts of the
Visayas.
Is a courtship dance but it can also refer
to a type of song to entertain the farmers
in the rice field.
5. POLKA
Originated from Bohemian dance that became
popular in Europe and America in the early 19th
Century.
There are some Philippine folksongs that are in

It is an art song that speaks
about love of a man for a
woman and can be a
nationalistic passion. It usually
starts in a minor key and then
goes to the major key.

BRASS BAND
BRASS BAND is a musical ensemble that consists
of brass instruments, most often with a percussion
section. The brass band in the Philippines consists
of a group of brass and woodwind instrumentalists
marching and playing on the street. It rose to
popularity in the 20th century during the Spanish
period. When men trained and conducted Spanish
army band. It was a great honor for an individual to
be affiliated with an army band, most especially to
be a conductor, because Filipinos were not allowed
to organize their own bands.
During the American regime, marching bands
were very popular. In 1902, the Philippine
Constabulary Band was founded by Walter H.
Loving. It brought international fame to the
country through its participation in international
expositions.
It is also played during the 1909 inauguration ofthe
US President William Howard Taft. The band was
recognized in 1946 and placed in the service of the
Philippine Army after the death of Howard Taft. It
was led by Col. Antonino Buenaventura, National
Artist for Music in 1988

WHAT IS
MUSIKONG
BUMBONG?
The MUSIKONG BUMBONG is a bamboo
band that uses improvised instruments.
It is the first bamboo band that came out
in the Philippines in 1896.
 Itis during the revolution were the revolutionaries who
made their own instruments played patriotic pieces
while they are fighting for independence from Spain.
Today, MUSIKONG BUMBONG or bamboo
music is still alive.
They have piccolo,
tuba, clarinets, flutes and
saxophones made of
bamboo.
Music plays important
part of festival and dance
within the culture.
LAS PIÑAS BAMBOO ORGAN IN
THE PHILIPPINES
FR.DIEGO CERA DELA VIRGEN started construction
of the bamboo organ in 1816 and it was finished
eight years after in 1824.
2003- The bamboo organ was declared a
National Cultural Treasure of the Philippines. It
is the popular tourist destination in Las Piñas.
The Las Piñas Bamboo Organ is known as the oldest
and the largest bamboo organ existing in the world
today. It also commemorates the courageous spirit
of the Filipino people behind the work and the
spirit existing from the Filipino bamboo.
ANGKLUNG ENSEMBLE
ANGKLUNG is an idiophone musical instrument with
two or more bamboo tubes attached to a bamboo frame.
The tubes are tuned to octaves or making chord. The base
of the frame is held with one hand while the other hand
shakes the instrument rapidly from side to side and this
cause a rapidly repeating note to sound.
Each performer in an Angklung Ensemble plays one
note or more. It is popular in Southeast Asia, but it
originated in Indonesia and has been played by the
Sundanese for centuries.
HIMIG PANGKAT KAWAYAN
HIMIG PANGKAT KAWAYAN is also known as
the “SINGING BAMBOO OF THE
PHILIPPINES”.
 It is an orchestra from nontraditional
bamboo instruments.
 It has more than a hundred musical
instruments with different sizes, shapes,
and designs made from six varieties of
bamboo.

The Himig Pangkat Kawayan plays native Philippine
