What is Kinship?
According to the Merriam dictionary, kinship systems
includes socially recognize relationship based on supposed
as well as actual genealogical ties.

It also is the bond of blood or marriage which binds people


together in group.
Types of Kinship
Consanguineous Kinship – Define as connection
between two or more people that are related biologically.
Such as Mother, Father, Siblings.

Affinal Kinship – Is based upon relationship between a


couple that lives together who are not married or legally
married couple.

Social Kinship – Define as connection between group of


people in a society such as friends, peers etc.,

Kinship by baptism
Baptism in the Philippines is such a popular life event
among Filipino Catholics. Because given are our basic
“family-centeredness” and “love of children.” These two
Filipino characteristics are fostered as baptism is
celebrated in our country. The Filipino culture has such a
strong religious dimension, and from this foundation,
baptismal celebrations play a significant role which is
also meaningful in a social sense. (Catechism for Filipino
Catholics, 1587).
Kinship by Baptism
Kinship by baptism or also know as Spiritual Kinship is
generally consist of people whom you choose to be kin.

As an example, if a married couple has a baby, when the


baby baptized the parents of it chooses what we called
“Ninong” and “Ninang” for the child. They also called as
Godfather and Godmother. Once you have served as
Ninong or Ninang, you become a relation to other
Ninongs and Ninangs as well as the family of the Child.
Kinship by Debut
Debut is a traditional celebration of birthday in Filipino
culture which celebrates a young women on their 18th
birthday. A Filipino men celebrate own his debut on their
21st birthday. They also called it as the age of Maturity in
the Philippines as well as legal Age.
You usually celebrate it with your Family, Friends,
Cousins, Uncles, Aunts, Godfathers and Godmothers are
the people whom you have a relationship.
Kinship by Marriage
According to Merriam-Webster, Marriage is the state of
being united as spouses in a consensual and contractual
relationship recognized by Law.

Marriage is an example of Affinal Kinship because through


Marriage the family of your husband or wife becomes your
family also.
Affinal Kinship is a relationship between two people who
are married. In other words, they are your in-laws. The
mother of your husband or wife will be your mother-in-law.
The father of your husband or wife will be your father-in-
law. The sister of your husband or wife will be your sister-
in-law. The brother of your husband or wife will be your
brother-in-law.
Kinship by Burial
According to English Dictionary, Burial is an act or
ceremony of putting a dead body into grave in the ground.

The Usual tradition of Burial in the Philippines the


bereaved family hold a wake for up to 7 days in honor to
their loved one. The coffin is elaborately adorned with
flowers and lights.
Kinship by Burial
The Family, Friends and Relatives whom does the person
died will visit during wake and can attend the burial.
During wake there is a sign guess book that you are going
to fill up upon entering the wake and you need to specify
what is your relationship to the dead person.
