Instructions for teachers
This instructional module is for students of grade
level 11-12. The primary subject is language arts.
The purple of this instructional module it will be to
introduce and explore the short story. Also, it will
introduce the short story to students, by exploring
what a short story is, and what elements are that
makes it a distinct genre.
For the implementations you will need:
Computer
Internet connection
The time to use the lesson it all depend on the
knowledge of the students. Aproximally 50 minutes.
Introduction
For understanding a short story and identify the
elements, the students need to recognize their
meaning and read the story in a meaningful way.
This instructional module will help students to makes
inferences on a fairy tales story the three little pigs.
Throughout this module the students will have the
opportunity to understand what is a short story and
identify the elements.
Overall Objectives
After the students have learned and studied all the
material presented in the instructional module they
will be able to react to different types of questions
related to the story and they will identify the
elements of short story.

For the use of this Instructional Module

1. Discussed and demonstrated what the definition of


the short story is, and its elements;
2. Established working definitions of the elements in a
short story;
3. Discussed a well know fairy tale, and applied each
of the elements to it;
4. Answers some questions for understanding and
quiz about the elements of the short story.

Brainstorm
As a students brainstorm characteristics that define
the short story.
What is the short story?
A short story is a form of short fictional
narrative prose. Which can be read in one
sitting.
Some example of short stories are: Tales,
fable, legend, parable, myth.
Element of short story
Title
It is an important part of the story. The title may
focus the readers attention on the central character,
or may give a clue to the authors purpose or basic
idea.

Author
Person who wrote the story.

Character
Person or animal who takes part in the action of a
literary work.
• Setting
The time and place in the action

• Plot
The sequence of events in a literary work

• Rising actions
The conflict intensifies

• Climax
High point of the story
• Falling actions
The solution to the problem
Reading
• The students will read a fairy tale “ The three little
pigs” and then point out the element of short story.

Activity 1- Recalling Story Details
After reading the story, check comprehension by
answering the following questions:

1. Why did the mother pig want the little pigs to move
out of her house?

2. Who lived in the woods near the little pigs?

3. What did the first little pig use to make his house?
4. What did the second little pig use to make his house?

5. What did the third little pig use to make his house?

6. What did the big bad wolf do to ruin the houses that
the pigs built?

7. Why didn’t the third little pig’s house fall down?

8. What happened when the wolf slid down the


chimney?

"Every story includes a Title, author, character,
setting, plot, rising action, climax and falling action.
Let’s talk about each of these."

1. Title: What is the title of this story?


2. Setting: Where does this story take place?
Does it take place in a real place or an imaginary
place?
Describe the setting where the story takes place.
3. Characters: Who are the characters in this
story?
Tell me about the character you like best.
Tell me about the character you like least.

4. Rising Action: In most popular stories, there is
a problem that needs to be solved.
Sometimes there is more than one problem.
Who has a problem in this story?
What is the problem?
5. Climax: The climax is the part of the story
when it becomes possible for the story
characters to solve a problem. It is the turning point
in the story. What happens
in this story to make it possible for the pigs to solve
their problem with the wolf?
6. Falling action: The resolution occurs when the
story problem is solved. What is the
resolution in this story? Do you like the way this
story ends?
