Concepts OF TEACHING

CHAPTER 1
 Asyou reflect on what teaching is, some thoughts will surface
and strike you. It is a profession as old as humanity itself.
 Teaching is an activity that follows and guides every learner in
his/her journey towards self-fulfillment, from the moment he/she
perceives the light of hope to the point of his/her success.
Teaching as a Ministry

 Ministry connotes the performance of certain activities for others. It

may be in the form of service to your students in order to help them
succeed in life. Teaching comprises one of the most meaningful
ministries in our life.
Teaching as a Ministry

 Theministry of teaching extends its services to all students

despite their cultural differences. Unity in diversity as the
popular line goes, permeates too one’s teaching ministry
especially at times of the learners’ inability to cope with the
demands of their students’ life.
Teaching as a Profession

 Teaching as a profession is in equal footing with other

professions by virtue of Presidential Decree 1006 which became
effective last January 16, 1977.
 In addition, this decree boosted the morale of teachers through
provision of incentives and motivation because like all other
professions, teaching requires a specific number of years of higher
education studies.
Other reasons why teaching is a profession are
the following:

 Has its own body of specialized knowledge

 Upholds service over and above personal and monetary profit
 Forprofessional competency, requires continuous professional
growth
 Establishes its own policies of standards for professional exercise
 Has its own unique professional organization
The National Competency-Based Teacher Standards
(NCBTS) challenges every teacher to grow personally
and professionally
The NCBTS is an integrated theoretical
framework that defines the different
dimensions of effective teaching, where
effective teaching means being able to help all
types of students learn the different learning
goals in the curriculum.

Teaching as a Science

 Like other professions, teaching must subject itself to an

organized and objective planning, preparation, and execution of
the lessons in order to direct the learners towards the different
learning episodes.
Teaching as a Science

 As a science, it is inspiring and refreshing craft to the teachers for

the laboratory is the classroom itself where meaningful and
relevant interaction takes place.
Teaching as a Vocation

 Itis in this concept of teaching that a teacher is committed to

endure in the teaching profession against all odds. If teaching is
viewed as a mere job, one will have in his/her mind the monetary
rewards that teaching will provide.
Teaching as a Vocation

 Otherteachers are being offered lucrative teaching positions

abroad and yet they persevere here in our country in order to
educate the Filipino students. What about you? Have you, in one
way or another, reflected on why you embraced the teaching
profession?

unique role of the teaching profession in this age of information.
