What is Improper Waste Disposal?
It is the disposal of waste in a way that has negative
consequences for the environment.
Examples:
• littering
• hazardous waste that is dumped into the ground
• not recycling items that should be recycled
OPO, Raquel O.
CAUSES/EFFECTS OF
IMPROPER WASTE DISPOSAL
• Soil Contamination
• Water Contamination
• Extreme Weather Caused by Climate
Change
• Air Contamination
• Human Damage
OPO, Raquel O.
Soil Contamination
Soil contamination occurs when human-made chemicals, such
as hydrocarbons and heavy metals, find their way into the
earth, altering the natural soil environment.
OPO, Raquel O.
Water Contamination
water contamination occurs when harmful substances—often
chemicals or microorganisms—contaminate a stream, river, lake,
ocean, aquifer, or other body of water, degrading water quality and
rendering it toxic to humans or the environment.
OPO, Raquel
Reduce
reducing the amount of waste we produce. Reducing simply means
producing less waste. It is the most effective way to keep the
environment clean.
Reduce your consumption of materials and goods. This may imply
restricting the number of orders you make in the first place.
Example:
• Purchase only what you needs.
• Look for items that can be built.
• Select products with minimal packaging.
MATILLANO, Frichiel
Reuse
• Reuse is the act of taking old items that you might consider
throwing away and finding a new use for them.
• The reusing process is not about repurposing the materials an
object is made of, but repurposing the very object itself. This
includes buying and selling used goods and repairing items
rather than discarding them.
Example:
• Containers can be reused at home or for school projects.
• Reuse wrapping paper, plastic bags, boxes, and lumber.
Example:
• Paper including newspapers, magazines, and mixed paper,
reprocessing into new paper products.
• Aluminum cans usually become new aluminum cans.
Recycling aluminum does not reduce the quality of the
metal, so it can be recycled constantly.
MICLAT, Hendry James
Compost
Composting is the natural process of recycling organic matter, such
as leaves and food scraps, into a valuable fertilizer that can enrich
soil and plants. Anything that grows decomposes eventually.
Example:
• Although all waste will eventually decompose, only certain
waste items are considered compostable and should be added to
compost containers. Food waste, such as banana peels, coffee
grinds and eggshells, are great items to compost.
• Coffee grounds and filters.
• Tea leaves and bags.
• Paper napkins.
• Cereal boxes.
