PROTECTION AND
CONSERVATION OF
THE NATIONAL
CULTURAL
HERITAGE
Protection and Conservation of the
FORMED AGENCY TO PROTECT CULTURAL
National Cultural Heritage
HERITAGE
It is an Act Providing for the Protection and
Conservation of the National Cultural Heritage,
Strengthening the National Commission for
Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and its affiliated
cultural agencies, and for other purposes. It was
passed in response to the 2000 demolition of the
Manila Jai Alai Building. This law aims to protect,
preserve, conserve and promote the nation's
cultural heritage, its property and histories, and
the ethnicity of local communities. It also aims to
establish and strengthen cultural institutions and
protect cultural workers and ensure their
professional development and well-being.
Protection and Conservation
The National Heritage
• Consists of spoken memories, stories, and songs, and the study of these, as a way of
communicating and discovering information about the past.
• It is the collection and study of historical information about individuals, families, important
events, or everyday life using audiotapes, videotapes, or transcriptions of planned
interviews.
• This method of interviewing is used to preserve the voices, memories and perspectives of
people in history.
The critical importance of local history in the understanding and the writing of a truly national history
cannot just be ignored. The rationale behind the need to come up with local history is the realization of the
unrepresentative and limited nature of Philippine history.
