OVER ONLINE LEARNING
WHAT IS ONLINE LEARNING?
▪ Online learning is education that takes place over the Internet.
It is often referred to as “elearning” among other terms.
However, online learning is just one type of “distance learning”
- the umbrella term for any learning that takes place across
distance and not in a traditional classroom. Online learning is
catalyzing a pedagogical shift in how we teach and learn. There
is a shift away from top-down lecturing and passive students to
a more interactive, collaborative approach in which students
and instructor co-create the learning process. Online distance
learning meets the needs of an ever-growing population of
students who cannot or prefer not to participate in traditional
classroom settings. The minimum requirement for students to
participate in an online course is access to a computer, the
Internet, and the motivation to succeed in a non-traditional
classroom. Online courses provide an excellent method of
course delivery unbound by time or location allowing for
accessibility to instruction at anytime from anywhere
WHY E-LEARNING DURING THE PANDEMIC?
▪ The COVID-19 pandemic has created the largest disruption of
education systems in human history, affecting nearly 1.6 billion
learners in more than 200 countries. Closures of schools, institutions
and other learning spaces have impacted more than 94% of the world’s
student population. This has brought far-reaching changes in all
aspects of our lives. Social distancing and restrictive movement
policies have significantly disturbed traditional educational practices.
Reopening of schools after relaxation of restriction is another
challenge with many new standard operating procedures put in place.
▪ Within a short span of the COVID-19 pandemic, many researchers have
shared their works on teaching and learning in different ways. Several
schools, colleges and universities have discontinued face-to-face
teachings. There is a fear of losing 2020 academic year or even more in
the coming future. The need of the hour is to innovate and implement
alternative educational system and assessment strategies. The COVID-
19 pandemic has provided us with an opportunity to pave the way for
introducing digital learning.
IMPACT OF ONLINE LEARNING ON STUDENTS

▪ No one imagined that Covid-19 would turn our world upside down and would bring major
changes to our lifestyle. The virus has spread everywhere like a wild forest fire due to which
numerous changes were accepted by people all over the world, and it took some time for
everyone to adapt to the new normal.
▪ Online learning is rapidly becoming one of the most effective ways to impart education. The
impact of the virus was so strong that online education became a seemingly ubiquitous part
of our growing world, which resulted in the closure of schools and no further physical
interaction of teachers with students. Fortunately, soon enough most of the schools and
educational institutions moved to online mode to resume their studies. As a result,
education has changed dramatically, with the distinctive rise of e-learning, whereby
teaching is undertaken remotely on digital platforms instead of physical classrooms.
▪ Online classes and technology have emerged as a superhero during the lockdown days.
With little time to prepare, curriculums were modified, new lesson plans were created,
activities were planned, all so that their students remain actively involved through online
learning.
▪ Most of the private and public schools have made a smooth transition to online platforms
such as Zoom, Google classrooms, Microsoft teams, etc. while many still find it a herculean
task
▪ One of the biggest challenges of online learning that many students face is the struggle to
focus for long durations on screen. Not to mention, there is a plethora of distracting content
available online which attracts and distracts the students more often than not. To avoid this
and help the students stay focused on the class, the teachers have made strenuous efforts
and designed their online classes to be crisp, engaging, and interactive. .
ADVANTAGES OF E-LEARNING
▪ For students, online classes have become an imminent trend in the education sector
around the globe. Digital learning has provided easy access to the files and folders
that can now be organised and saved without any physical damage. With one click,
students can access their notes and assignments without the fear of misplacing or
spoiling them. With advanced technology, this mode of learning has not only been
simpler but fun and engaging as well. Technology-enabled learning is beneficial and
has proven to be more engaging as it helps in making those subjects interactive and
fun which are traditionally considered dull by students. It became very convenient
for the students to attend classes from anywhere in the world as both classes and
learning content was easily accessible at home. Integration of the learning
platforms with new-age interactive applications has made online classes more
convenient for both students and teachers as more students are able to express
their views at the same time using certain online applications. Students have been
more particular with their online submission as they are notified on a regular basis
and it is an effortless task for the teachers to track down the students who have
failed to submit their assignments on time. Online learning has helped students to
become independent learners before they make their way into the real world.
Students got opportunities to explore new learning applications and platforms
during the class, which helped them to develop new skills and capabilities
accelerating their growth trajectory. Some of the students have been responding
well to the active learning environment created online by the teachers whereas
others need a push in fits and starts.
DISADVANTAGES OF E-LEARNING

▪ One of the biggest challenges of online learning that many

students face is the struggle to focus for long durations on
screen. Not to mention, there is a plethora of distracting
content available online which attracts and distracts the
students more often than not. nline classes are not completely
reliable as internet connectivity plays a vital role. While access
to the internet has drastically improved over the past few
years, in some parts of the country, people still lack access to
decent internet speed and connectivity. With the cameras
turned off there is a disconnection between the teachers and
students. It is observed widely that students would log into the
class and then get distracted with other activities.  Given that
students are free from the regulations and boundaries of an
appropriate classroom environment, it is perceived that the
curriculum is not given importance by the students.
A SURVEY OF THE REASONS OF HINDERANCES IN ONLINE CLASSES
▪ Amid the ongoing covid-19 pandemic, where the schools have taken up online classes
to overcome the loss, NCERT has released a survey which stated that at least 27
percent students do not have access to smartphones or laptops to attend online
classes, while 28 percent students and parents believe that lack of electricity is one of
the major concerns hindering teaching-learning. With over 34, 000 participants
including students, parents, teachers, and school principals from Kendriya Vidyalayas,
Navodyaya Vidyalas and CBSE affiliated schools, the survey has pointed out that that
lack of knowledge of using devices for effective educational purposes and teachers
not being well-versed with online teaching methodologies, caused hindrance in the
learning process.

▪ "Approximately 27 percent of the students mentioned the non-availability of

smartphones and laptops. The maximum number of stakeholders have opted for
mobile phones as a medium for teaching-learning during the Covid-19 period," .

▪ "About 36 percent of the students used the textbooks and other books available with
them. Laptops were the second most favored option amongst teachers and principals.

▪ "The absence of enriched interaction between the teacher and the students was one of
the reasons as identified by the stakeholders," it added.

Advancements
▪ Digital transformation is affecting every industrial sector, from corporate to education. Technology in education has
created a new way of learning. The introduction of the coolest tech gadgets, highly advanced tools for trainers, and
trailblazing equipment lead to the development of elearning solutions. eLearning is among the greatest innovations of
the 21st Century and has become one of the most important modes of higher education, especially for working
professionals. To survive in this competitive world, it is very essential to keep yourself up-to-date with the latest
technology trends.

▪ 1.    Big Data Analytics

▪ Big data has revolutionized the e-learning industry. With the help of big data analytics, it has become easy for
professionals to create more engaging, personalized, and informative modules. This technology has simplified the
complex processes of understanding consumer behavior and demand. The tech analyses huge amounts of data in a
matter of minutes, giving useful insights. The integration of big data in e-learning has boosted the growth prospects
tremendously and analysis of instant feedback from users promoted the success of this platform.
▪ 2.    Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality
▪ Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) have become popular phenomena in the last few years, especially
after the advent of smart devices to support tech. Both technologies are now being used in the e-learning industry,
to make learning an immersive and engaging experience, especially using VR devices.
▪ AR VR solutions allow online instructors to explain things to their students using 3D tech, giving real-life examples
and demos. This gives learners a better understanding of their respective subjects.
▪ 3.    Microlearning
▪ Due to the tight schedules, working professionals seldom get time for full-fledged e-learning. To tackle this, micro-
learning came into existence, which means preparing micro content which is small in size yet gives substantial
meaning. Ever thought of a single infographic explaining a 10-page book? This sounds really amazing, Right. A large
number of e-learning providers are using micro-learning as it is very economical to build,  deployed quickly, and
updated easily. Short videos, infographics, webinars, audio clips, podcasts, etc. are a few examples of micro-
learning modules.
▪ For instance, the creation of small educational videos of 5-10 minutes or single-page articles explaining a complex
theory in a short time is possible using micro-learning. This has enabled busy professionals to take up e-learning
courses that can upscale their knowledge in a short span of time.

▪ 4.    Personalized Learning
▪ The primary drawback of the traditional learning method is the content of study
material, designed for intelligent students and the average one is exactly the same. But
Elearning solutions providers realized the need for personalized content. This approach
offers customized elearning solutions as per each individual’s strength, skill, and
interest.
▪ Personalized content is a part of competency-based learning, providing teaching and
guidance to each student as per their grasping capacity. This includes specialized e-
tutorials, videos, and other digital study material, tailored-made to meet an individual's
level of understanding.
▪ 5.    Cloud-Based Learning
▪ Cloud services have boosted user reach in many sectors, and e-learning is no exception.
Especially, in organizational e-learning, cloud computing services have proved to be a
boon in terms of data and cost-saving. The introduction of cloud-based learning has
allowed instructors to reach in order to circulate digital modules efficiently. Also, cloud-
based data sharing has resolved the issue of copyright infringement to a great extent.
Instructors can now share data only with those intended, instead of posting it online in
the public domain. Moreover, cloud uploading is faster as well.
▪ 6.   Virtual Classrooms
▪ A major problem with e-learning was that it had no live interactions, and a human touch
was really missing. The solution to this was the introduction of Virtual Classrooms to the
e-learning platform. With the use of video conferencing, it has become easy for
instructors and students to interact, communicate, collaborate, and share ideas. The
students have the option of selecting the teachers using this platform. Virtual
classrooms have essentially benefited the e-learning platform as well as its user.
▪ Extensive E-learning Trends to Look Into
▪ Mobile Learning
▪ As per the 2020 report, 6.95 billion people were avid mobile users and were
expected to reach 7.1 billion by the end of 2021. When evaluated, the
penetration rate of mobile phones in the lives of people globally was 67%
(Source: We Are Social, 2020).
▪ These stats prove that developing any elearning software must be
developed keeping the mobile-first approach. The proliferation of mobile
learning solutions has minimized the need to stick to one place for learning
▪ Social Learning
▪ This mode is not new for people. Social learning has been improved over
time. This model of learning is widely adopted at modern workplaces as
well. As per the Brandon Hall report, around 73% of organizations are
expected to invest in social learning methodologies.
▪ Work-life Skills
▪ Since the pandemic arrested everybody at home, learning new skills was
limited to screens. The need for effectiveness and productivity pushed
users to look for learning which encouraged digital
product engineering services providers to develop intuitive and robust
learning platforms.
▪ Adaptive Learning
▪ Another form of learning progressing these days is adaptive learning. As per the
annual L& D global sentiment survey, adaptive learning was the top trending
learning practice outperforming AR, social learning, and microlearning.
▪ Adaptive learning emphasizes personalized learning. Learners can leverage
trending technologies, such as robust analytics, confidence-based assessment,
and pre-learning tests.
▪ Artificial Intelligence
▪ One of the hottest trends in elearning is Artificial Intelligence. The trend
empowers modern learning and development platforms. Integrating your
LCMS software with AI can shake up your entire elearning realm.
▪ With AI's powerful algorithms, you can quickly collect data, such as strengths,
weaknesses, interests, and proficiency of learners for creating more
personalized and relevant learning experiences.
▪  Gamification and Game-based Learning
▪ Gamification in elearning is meant for developing engagement and boosting
retention rates. Gamification has established itself as a modern learning
strategy. Today, the market is filled with different types and sizes of
gamification that assist in increasing the effectiveness of learning.
▪ As per the survey in 2020, the game-based learning platforms are expected to
increase revenue by $28.8 million by 2025.
Challenges faced by students
▪ 1. Lack of interest
▪ Humans are social animals, and the most introverted ones also need to
see faces and have human interactions once in a while. The children have
grown to lose interest in their classes.
▪ The pressure of after-school homework and assignments has triggered a
great toll on the mental health and mood.
▪ 2. Stress and anxiety
▪ The concentration levels of students dropped in online learning as the
eye meanders elsewhere on the screen. This in response made it difficult
for most students to keep up with the teachings.
▪ Most children were seen lagging behind and succumbing to the pressure.
The mental state of the children was fragile and tampered with.
▪ 3. Zoom fatigue
▪ Zoom fatigue refers to the exhaustion after having attended zoom
classes, or video conferences. With the screen time increasing drastically,
the mind is overwhelmed with information and the brain finds it rather
difficult to register all the information.
▪ EFFECTS OF ONLINE CLASSES ON STUDENTS
▪ 1. Eyesight problems
▪ Increased screen time has increased the strain on the eyes,
resulting in major headaches. This was applicable not only to
the students but also to teachers.
▪ 2. Lack of classroom ethics
▪ The classroom ethics have been compromised to great
lengths. The posture, regularity, lack of routine, attentiveness
has all resulted in health hazards. Constant sitting has caused
weight concerns as well.
▪ 3. Bad ergonomics
▪ Human factors and ergonomics is the application of
psychological and physiological principles to the engineering
and design of products, processes, and systems.
▪ Studying online has resulted in poor/bad ergonomics, thus
resulting in a lot of issues as regards back pain and
fibromyalgia pains.
▪ 4. Lack of physical activities
▪ The lack of physical activities has caused children to become obese.
Thanks to binge eating and watching, it's only gotten worse.
▪ Muscle spasms, muscle rigidity, and lack of calcium, etc are all
based on lack of physical activity.
▪ 5. Lack of Vitamin D
▪ Online Education surprisingly has resulted in a lack of Vitamin D.
Lack of sunlight, poor diet, and exercise have resulted in more
problems than one could anticipate.
▪ 6. Calcium deficiency
▪ As weird as it sounds, the lack of physical activity and calcium has
resulted in trivial injuries, thus resulting in extensive injuries further.
▪ ---
▪ In conclusion, we can say that online education initially started as a
great advantage but took a drastic turn and didn’t work so much in
the same spirit. With the increased screen time, eyesight issues,
headaches, and strain have increased a great deal.
CHALLENGES FACED BY TEACHERS DURING ONLINE
CLASSES
▪ #1 Engaging Students during Online Class
▪ As students are moving towards online learning from traditional
classrooms, it becomes difficult for teachers to adjust to a new
learning platform. Teaching online may not influence and engage
students for longer periods of time. They can easily get distracted and
lose concentration during live sessions.
▪ #2 Time Commitment Issue in Online Learning
▪ If the course content is thought in person then you might not really
understand the time commitment . Teachers should be given some
time for proper planning of the content and methods to deliver to the
students. Teachers are not able to deliver effective content in time. It is
said that teachers take more time in teaching online than face to face
▪ #3 Teacher Communication Problem During Online Learning Class
▪ The more detailed the syllabus, the easier it is to communicate to the
students. Sometimes teachers are not given enough time for the
preparation of content for their students. And also there are students
who avoid communication with teachers during online learning. Online
teaching is like communicating without body language
▪ #4  Assessment Challenge in Online Learning
▪ Assessment is the most important part of online learning for students as
well as teachers. And it causes stress to students at times. So whenever
there are assignments or projects, teachers might face a lot of questions
from the students. As there is less communication between students and
teachers, expectation from the students’ performances also differs
▪ #5 Teacher Feedback During Online Class
▪ Every student needs feedback for their performance for improvement.
Teachers find it difficult to give feedback to all students individually.
Sometimes few students get benefited from it and others don’t. As
students are not given proper feedback leading to poor performance.
▪ # 7 Lack fo Proper Teaching Methods in Online Learning
▪ We know that most of the teachers follow typical classroom-style
teaching methods, as they use to teach with only a blackboard and
books. It becomes difficult for them to adopt new teaching methods that
are completely virtual and technology-driven.
▪ #8 Online Learning Challenges – Fear of Cheating
▪ Sometimes teachers might feel concerned about the risk of cheating in
online learning. They feel that students can cheat to get better results in
the tests and assignments.
▪ The Perspectives of Educators and Learners on E-Learning: A Cross-Sectional
Descriptive Study in a Medical School
▪ Purpose: To determine the challenges, effectiveness, level of reception and
acceptance of E-learning by students (learners) and faculty (educators) in a medical
college during the lockdown period of the COVID-19 pandemic.
▪ Methods: An online questionnaire-based cross-sectional study was conducted
among learners and educators at AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India, in the month
of August 2020. A total of 203 learners and 24 educators participated in the study.
The link of the Google form containing the questionnaire was sent to the students
and teachers, and the responses obtained were analyzed with SPSS software
(version 20).
▪ Results: Two hundred three MBBS students and twenty-four faculty members
participated in the study. In our study, 34.5% (n=70) learners and 62.5% (n=15)
educators preferred supplementation of E-learning with conventional mode of
pedagogy in the future. There was a significant correlation between the
convenience and the effectiveness of E-learning. Both learners and educators
considered E-learning to be moderately effective. The major problems faced by the
educators while conducting online sessions were network issues, difficulty in
conducting practicals, lack of controlled environment, and lack of attentiveness by
the learners. More than half of the students were satisfied with the E-learning
provided by the institute. Educators found E-learning to be moderately convenient,
whereas they felt conventional classroom teaching is highly convenient.
▪ Conclusion: Educators and learners were quick to adapt to the online mode of
learning but the shift was mired with initial challenges. There is a requirement of
capacity building in terms of skill development and digital infrastructure building to
ensure seamless and effective E-learning. Keywords: COVID-19, lockdown, medical
education, conventional pedagogy effectiveness
▪ How Artificial Intelligence will Transform the Future of Elearning?
▪ Artificial Intelligence, also called Machine Intelligence refers to the model of
human intelligence in machines that are programmed to think just like
humans and mimic their actions. AI solutions are known to enhance human
efficiency, and their efforts as well as automates manually challenging data
management tasks. AI development tools comply with three basic
principleLearning ,Self- correction,Reasoning
▪ Education is one of the most important fields that need to put on modern
technology. AI smart solutions are already accessed in IB classrooms to
check the activities and performances of individual students. In return, these
solutions allow them to dispense personalized feedback for the development
of the learner as a whole. AI is the key to not only make it a possibility, but a
certainty.
▪ Artificial Intelligence solutions are known to provide a streamlined
workflow; as a result, one can expect a smoother and enriched learning
experience. The biggest advantage of using these solutions is that the
learners will receive personalized tutoring sessions. The online tutoring
company “Squirrel AI” is an example that uses an AI-powered learning
system to respond in real-time by building a curriculum that focuses on what
needs attention. Also, somewhere the personal touch is not available. AI will
help educators create new, immersive scenario-based learning instead of
following a pre-planned script. AI creates a more realistic environment and
identifies which data is important and which are irrelevant, which makes the
course and teaching smooth and qualitative.
