WHAT ARE MY RIGHTS

AND DUTIES?
“RIGHTS THAT DO NOT FLOR FROM DUTY WELL PERFORMED ARE NOT WORTH HAVING.”
- MOHANDAS “MAHATMA” GANDHI
 As adolescents, we may have experienced how it feels when
somebody takes advantage of us our friends. No one among us
would tolerate acts against our dignity. Hence, we need to make
sure that we respect other’s rights. This is our responsibility to
others.
 We recognize that human rights are important for human
beings to grow more fully as persons and to attain a meaningful
life with others. We will identify these rights and how we can
promote and respect other’s rights.
What are Human Rights?

 A right is a fundamental claim we make on others and the society we live in, so we
can live with dignity and experience a full human life. Everyone in this world is
entitled to basic human rights. Respecting the rights of others and imploding our own
rights protect our human dignity. These human rights ensure that the dignity of
everyone is duly respected.
 right to life
 right to education
 right to religion
 right to free expressions
 right to property
The Universal Declaration of Human
Rights

 The worldwide experience of violence and dehumanizing

actions during the Second World War prompted the countries
of the world to gather and create a forum that addressed the
consequences of this war and formulated means to prevent such
inhumanities to happen again.
 We call this forum the United Nations (UN). The United
Nations was founded in 1945 that worked immediately to assert
the rights of all human beings. Human rights were cited as an
important and central concern of the UN up to the present
time.
The Universal Declaration of Human
Rights

 In 1948, the newly formed forum came up with a document

called The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), in
response to the devastating effects of WW11. the UDHR begins
with the following words;
1. “disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in
barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind;”
and
2. Recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and
inalienable rights of all member of the family is the foundation of
freedom, justice, and peace in the world.”
For Every Right, There Is a Corresponding
Duty or Responsibility

 A duty or responsibility is something that we are obliged to do.

It is important to fulfill them for the benefit of other people, the
government , and the society.
 if we focus only on our rights, we may become selfish. It is one
of the most irresponsible things that we can do as a person. If
we focus on our duty, our duties will lead to cooperation and
an establishment of a community where people can grow more
in happiness and peace.
For Every Right, There Is a Corresponding
Duty or Responsibility

 Human rights are meant to ensure that we enjoy our dignity as

human. It is in the promotion and exercise of human rights that
we experience our humanity. When we take our duty to protect
and to respect the rights of others seriously, we contribute to a
society where everyone can live in peace and each one attains
his or her full development as a person.
