INTRODUCTION
 Knowledge of the profession’s history
increases the nurse’s awareness and
promotes an understanding of the social and
intellectual origins of the discipline. From
its earliest history nursing was a form of
community service to protect and preserve
the family. Historically men and women
held the role of nurse. In Prehistoric Period,
women were responsible for gathering
herbs, roots and plants that were used to
heal the sick.

Establishment of Indian Nursing
Council(1947)
 There should be only 2 standards of training of
General Nursing and Midwifery-
 The full course of General Nursing: 3 yr & 9 months
midwifery
 A.N.M course:2 yr
 Minimum Entrance Req. :
 G.N.M-10th
 A.N.M-7th or 8th
 A.N.M course replace junior grade Nursing

DEVELOPMENT OF NURSING
EDUCATION IN INDIA
The Auxiliary Nurse Midwife Programme:
•The 1st course was started at St.Mary’s Hospital Taran taran,
Punjab in 1951.
•The entrance qualification was raised from 7th to matriculation.
UNIVERSITY LEVEL PROGRAMMES:
Basic B.Sc Nursing:
•The need of nursing at university level was felt in 1940 by TNAI
members.
•B.Sc Nursing was started in July 1946 in School of Hospital
Administration later known as College of Nursing then called
Rajkumari Amrit Kaur College of Nursing, New Delhi in 1972.
•Started in CMC Vellore,in1946
Post-Basic/ Post-Certificate B.Sc Nursing:
• Training for certificate nurses was stressed by Mudaliar
Committee in 1962.
• 2 yr degree program was started in Dec.1962 by School of
Nursing, University of Thiruvananthpuram.
 Post-Graduate Education:
M.Sc Nursing:
• 2 yr Degree course was started at RAK College of Nursing,
New Delhi in 1959.
• Started at CMC Vellore in 1969.
• M.Sc Nursing in Psychiatry was started in Sept.1983 at
NIMHANS, Bangalore.
M.Phil Programme:

• Suggested to RAK College principal by INC


inspection committee on Sept.13,1977.
• Started on Oct.15,1986
• 1 yr for regular and 2 yr for part time candidates.
Ph.D Programme:
• Started from 1990 at PGI Chandigarh, CMC Vellore,
RAK New Delhi etc.
• At NIMHANS, Bangalore for their own faculty.
AT GLOBAL LEVEL
ASSOCIATE DEGREE EDUCATION:
• 2 yr program offered by university or junior
college.
• Focus on basic sciences, theoretical & clinical
courses.
DIPLOMA EDUCATION:
• In U.S, It is 2-3 yr hospital based diploma
program.
• In CANADA, It is 2 yr community college or
hospital based diploma program.
BACCALAUREATE EDUCATION:

• 4 yr degree program focuses on basic sciences,


theoretical & clinical courses as well as on
social sciences, arts and humanities.
• B.Sc Nursing/BN (Canada)= B.Sc Nursing (U.S)
ACCREDITITION:
• Nursing program must meet the criteria
established by National League For Nursing
Accrediting.
LICENSURE:
• RN candidates must pass National Council
Licensure Examination For Registered
Nurses in U.S.
CERTIFICATION:
• National Nursing Organizations e.g. ANA
provide many type of certificates.
• Validation can be continued by ongoing
continuing education & clinical or
administrative practice.
MASTER’S DEGREE PREPARATION:
• After completing graduation in nursing one
can receive Master in Nursing or Master of
Science in Nursing.
• M.Sc Nurse can work as Nurse Educator,
Clinical Nurse Specialist, Nurse
Administrator or Nurse Practitioner.
DOCTORAL PREPARATION:

• Started in 1953 at University of Pittsburgh.


• Emphasize on basic Research and Theory.
CONTINUING AND IN-SERVICE
EDUCATION:
• Continuing education involves formal,
organized and educational programs.
• Help Nurses become specialized in
particular area.
LICENSED PRACTICAL NURSE
EDUCATION:
• A Licensed or Vocational Nurse is
trained in basic nursing techniques and
direct client care.
• LPN or LVN practice under the
supervision of a RN.
