Chapter 1: Fundamentals of
Measurement Systems

• Introduction
• Elements of a Measurement System
• Choosing Appropriate Measuring Instruments
• Measurement System Applications
• Data acquisition system (DAQ)
Introduction
• Instrumentation is the science of automated measurement and
control.
• Applications of this science abound in modern research,
industry, and everyday living.
• automobile engine control systems
• home thermostats
• aircraft autopilots
• manufacture of pharmaceutical drugs
•…
Measurement
• Measurement of a given quantity is essentially an act or result of
comparison between the quantity (whose magnitude is unknown)
and predetermined or predefined standards.
• Two quantities are compared the result is expressed in numerical
values.
• Examples:
• Fluid pressure, • Fluid flow rate
• The temperature of an object • Fluid volume stored in a vessel
• Chemical concentration • Machine position, motion, or acceleration
• Physical dimension(s) of an object • Count (inventory) of objects
• Electrical voltage, current, or resistance
Elements of a Measurement System
Sensor
• A sensor is a device that receives a stimulus and responds with an electrical
signal.
• Stimulus : measurand
Group Discussion:
Choosing Appropriate Measuring Instruments
• What are the main factors governing the choice of a measuring instrument for a
given application?
Measurement System Applications
• Automatic feedback control systems
Measurement System Applications
Example: boiler water level control system

Level transmitter (pneumatic): sense the

water level in the steam drum and report
that measurement to the controller
Example: wastewater disinfection
Analytical Transmitter : analyze the
concentration of chlorine dissolved in
the water and transmit this information
to the control system

P&ID (Process and Instrument Diagram)

Example: chemical reactor temperature control

Instruments ?
Output types ?
Data acquisition system (DAQ)
Data acquisition system (DAQ)
Sensor system in modern car
Wireless Parking Lot Sensor
Data acquisition system (DAQ) - SCADA
Problems
• What are the main elements in a measurement system and what are their
functions?
• Which elements are not needed in some measurement systems and why are they
not needed?
