Abstract:
 A FACTS device named as UPFC (unified power flow controller). Its special
features are to control active and reactive power course in a transmission line and
to adjust the voltage at the bus at which it is situated.
 This device gives great quality flow on power system stability; So this device
gives unique control on the power flow and voltage stability.
 When there is no FACTs device (UPFC) the active power, reactive power and
voltage through the transmission line cannot be controlled.
Introduction:

 Throughout the world the demand of electrical power is increasing


tremendously day by day, hence capable transmission and distribution
systems with the most excellent quality of supply is required.
 Flexible ACTransmission Systems (FACTS) play a vital role in increasing power
transfer capability of the present transmission lines and improving power quality
indistribution lines for the past two decades.
 There are frequent disturbnce in a power system due to its dynamic nature and it
can lead the system unsteady condition.
Facts

 Flexible AC Transmission System(FACTS) is a new integrated concept based


on per electronic switching counters and dynamic controllers to enhance the
system uilization and power transfer capacity as well as the stability, security,
reliability and power quality of AC system inter connection.

 FACTS technology improved transmissions system with minimum investment


environmental impact and implementation time compared to the construction
of new transmission line.
Benifits of FACTS

 Reduce the need for construction of new transmissin lines,


capacitors and reactors.
 Provides great ability to transfer power between controller areas.
 Iprovement the transient stability of the system.
 Controls real and reactive power flow in the line independantly.
 Damping of oscillation which can threaten security or limit the
usable line capacity.

Itroduction of UPFC

 The UPFC concept describe in 1995 by L.Gyugyi.


 The UPFC is a device which can control simultaneously all three parameters
of line power flow.
 There are frequently disturbance in a power system due to its dynamic nature
and it can lead the system unsteady condition.
 With the increasing demand, the existing transmission network should be
used optimally rather than constructing new transmission lines.
 The UPFC is a modern FACT device thatcan be used for control of active and
reacvtive power in a transmission lines.
Circuit Description

 The basic configuration of a UPFC


which s installed between the sending
end (Vs) and recieving end (VR).

 It is the coombination of a series


device and shunt device which are
connected to a common dc link
capacitor.

Operation of UPFC

 The function of converter-1 is to supply or absorb real power


demended by converter-2.which it drives from the transmissin line
itself.
 The series converter is controlled to inject a voltage phasor,Vpq in
series with the line ,which can be varied from 0 to Vpq max.
 The phase angle of Vpq can be independently varied from 0O to 360
degrees.

Applications

 Using HVDC transmission system.


 Use of UPFC for optimal power flow control.
 For improving micro grid voltage profile.
 For enhancement of voltage profile and minimization of losses.
 Increase transient stability of inter area power system.
 For damping power system oscillation.
CONCLUSION

 UPFC is FACTS device used to control active and reactive power


flow.

 The overall result over the power system is that it improved the
power factor.

 So, it bring the present power system at bettereconomy level.
