The gantry tilt movement is controlled from the RTC-MCB. A manual tilt movement is started from the gantry
components keypad. An automatic tilt movement is started from the Somaris software.
The tilt circuit includes the MCU D301, the tilt frequency converter E302, the tilt motor M302 including the motor
brake Y2, the tilt sensor B301 and the power supply stationary (PSS).

This overview shows the functions of the generator.
components The main inverter has to supply the AC voltage ( f > 20kHz) connected as COM1 and COM2 to the high voltage
transformer in the high voltage tank.
The main inverter and thus the high tension is controlled from the main control board D400 via the trigger pulses
Sensation
Ign_S1S4 and Ign_S2S3. The frequency of those pulses determines the frequency of the main inverter output current
and hence the value of the high tension.
The control board D400 has to monitor:
the high voltage
the tube current
the temperature and pressure in the high voltage tank using feedback values from D432
the output voltages of the generator power supply.
In the high voltage tank the H.V. transformer has to transform the AC input current delivered from the main inverter
to the secondary side, where it is rectified and used to charge up capacitors to KV_pos and KV_neg i.e. to UT.
Additionally the isolation transformer for the AC filament current delivered from FIL_Power D470 is mounted in the
high voltage tank.
Finally there are voltage dividers within the tank, used to generates the actual values for high voltage and tube
current on D432 (mounted on top of the tank).

The Image Control System (ICS) is the host computer for the SOMATOM Sensation 16 scanner. The ICS is also
components called "Navigator".
It provides the user interface and hardware interfaces to the gantry, the Image Reconstruction System (IRS), and the
peripherals. The ICS is used to control the scan as well as the reconstruction computer.
Sensation
It can be used for the following additional tasks:
- 2-D image postprocessing
- 3-D image postprocessing
- image archiving
- filming control

The task of the Image Reconstruction System (IRS) is:
components - to collect the measurement data from the Data
Measurement System (DMS)
- to preprocess the data
Sensation
- to store the raw data
- to calculate the slice matrix
- to send the image data to the Image Control System
(ICS) for display and storage

The patient table PHS (Patient Handling System) of the SOMATOM Sensation 16 was designed to support the
options of Spiral CT and Interventional CT.
components The mechanical assembly can be split into
the table top, the cradle where the patient is positioned,
Sensation the top support which carries the table top and
the spindle and scissors arrangement to raise and lower the whole table.

The machine design is based on the distributed intelligence, i. e. all functions which must be controlled will be
components handled by a function controller. These controllers will receive commands and they are responsible for the correct
execution and feedback of its function. If a controller recognizes that a function cannot be executed it reports an error
or warning.
