Jose Rizal in America

Rizal first saw America on April 28, 1888.


ARRIVAL IN SAN FRANCISCO
 The steamer, Belgic, Rizal on board, docked at
San Francisco on Saturday morning, April 28,
1998.
 The American authorities placed the ship
under quarantine.
 The ship was carrying 643 Chinese Coolies.
 After a week of quarantine, first class
passengers were permitted to land.
Rizal in San Francisco
 He arrived in San Francisco on Friday afternoon, May
4, 1888.
 Rizal registered at the Palace Hotel.

“I lodged in Palace Hotel. $4 a day with bath and everything


included. Stockton St., 312. I saw the Golden Gate… On Sunday,
the stores are closed. The best street in San Francisco is Market
Street.”

U.S. senate that time.
 He is also the founder and
benefactor of Stanford
University at Palo Alto,
California.

 On May 6, 1888 – Sunday, 4:30 pm, Rizal left San
Francisco for Oakland by ferry boat.
Arrival in Oakland
 He boarded the train for his trip across the
continent.

 He took his supper at Sacramento for $75 and slept


in his couch.

Niagara Falls
 Rizal was amazed by the titanic size of the falls and
the thunder that it created as more than 168,000
cubic meters of water poured down every minute.
 He called the falls as “The Majestic Cascade”.

“It is not as pretty as the falls in


Los Banos but there is no
comparison between the two
falls.”
Arrival in New York
 Rizal reached New York at the end of their trip, on
Sunday at 11:10 in the morning, May 13, 1888.

 He got a room at the Fifth Avenue Hotel.

 He stayed three days in New York which he sooner


called “The Big City”

 He visited the scenic and historic places around the
city.
 He was awed and inspired by the memorial of
George Washington.

 The natural beauty of the land.
 The high standards of living.
 The opportunities for better life offered to poor
immigrants.
Rizal’s Bad Impression of the America
 Non-existence of true civil liberty.

 The existence of racial prejudice.

 The valuing of money over human life.

 Lack of racial equality.

But only for the
