This document provides instructions for using Photoshop's Surface Blur and High Pass filters to smooth skin texture in portraits while retaining natural appearance. It describes applying Surface Blur at 20-40 radius/30-50 threshold to the skin selection on a duplicate layer, then using High Pass at a low radius on another duplicate layer to bring back subtle texture. Blending the layers at soft light and lowering opacity achieves a realistic balance of smoothness and detail.

Lesson 16
The Skin Smoothing
Technique
CHESTER M. APOSTOL Photoshop Instructor Lesson Objectives
Explain the Surface Blur filter and its
options. Discuss the procedure for softening skin using the Surface Blur filter. Discuss the procedure for bringing back skin texture using the High Pass filter. Smoothing Skin Using Surface Blur Filter 1. Open the portrait image that you want to apply the skin smoothing technique on. 2. Remove skin blemishes. 3. Mask the skin area in the Quick Mask mode . 4. Inverse the selection by clicking [Select]-[Inverse] in the menu bar or by pressing [Shift]+[Ctrl]+[I] ([Shift] +[Command]+[I] on Mac). 5. Press [Ctrl]+[J] ([Command]+[J] on Mac) twice to copy the selection to a new layer. The first copy layer (Layer 1) will be used for smoothing the skin and the second copy layer (Layer 1 copy) for bringing back the skin texture . Smoothing Skin Using Surface Blur Filter 6. To see the effect of the surface blur filter that will be applied to the second layer (Layer 1), hide the topmost layer (Layer 1 copy) by clicking the layer visibility icon. 7. Make sure that the second layer (Layer 1) is selected. Click [Filter]-[Blur]-[Surface Blur] in the menu bar to display the Surface blur dialog box. 8. In the Radius textbox, enter a value from 20 to 40. In the Threshold textbox enter a value from 30 to 50. 9. Click the OK button when done. Sample Surface Blur Output

Bringing Back Skin Texture Using High Pass Filter 1. Click the layer visibility icon of the topmost layer (Layer 1 copy) to make it visible again. 2. Ensure that the topmost layer is selected. 3. Click [Filter]-[Other]-[High Pass] in the menu bar to display the High Pass dialog box. 4. In the High Pass dialog box, move the Radius slider to the leftmost side. Notice that the skin is solid gray. 5. Move the slider to the right until the skin texture becomes visible. 6. Click the OK button. Bringing Back Skin Texture Using High Pass Filter
7. Change the blending mode of the topmost layer
(layer where you applied the high pass filter) to Soft Light. 8. Notice that the skin texture is now visible but the skin still looks unrealistic. To make skin smoothness and texture look realistic, lower the opacity of the layer where you applied the surface blur filter (Layer 1) and the layer where you applied the high pass filter (Layer 1 copy).
