    Becoming a priest is both a
    gift and a choice. It is a
    decision to make and be
    committed into with God’s
    grace. It is not some sort of
    magical calling to some but a
    call opens to all men.

    they were mediators between the people and God and to
    offer sacrifice

    mission of Christ in a special way.
    • it is a call to live in holiness through loving
    service to His people
    • like the laity (us), they also strive to be holy
    they, too, need a conversion
    What does a priest do?
    Generally, the basic work of a
    priest is to bring Christ and His
    consciousness to the people by his
    life and works. This can be done in
    a number of ways.
    What does a priest do?
    A priest has to spend time preparing and
    administering the different sacraments –
    Baptism, Confirmation (when given the
    ecclesiastical power by the Bishop to
    administer),Holy Eucharist, Confession,
    Anointing of the Sick and Marriage.
    What does a priest do?
    As representative of Christ, he makes Christ
    visibly present to the people. He can involve
    himself to the youth. He can visit different
    families. He can make himself available for
    spiritual guidance and counseling. He can do a
    lot in bringing Christ to them.
    What does a priest do?
    But one thing a priest should remember is
    that the best teaching is the example of
    goodness and holiness. The spirituality of
    the community is very much affected by
    the kind of life the priest exemplifies.
    What does a priest do?
    There are times that the loyalty of the
    people are drawn towards the priest
    himself than to Christ. This should not
    happen. But this tell us of the reality that
    the priest has influence on the spirituality
    of the community.
    Who qualifies?
    Priesthood is a vocation. It is a state of life
    filled with joy and happiness as well as works
    and challenges. What the qualities that a priest
    should have that he may become an effective
    and efficient priest? The discerned qualities
    that a candidate for priesthood should have are
    the following:
    1. Strong faith on God - priest
    sees God in everything and
    trusts Him
    2. Love and respect for the
    people - priest serves and care
    for the people
    3. Patience and diligence -
    priest overcomes hardships of
    the ministry
    4. Sociability - priest knows
    how to deal and relate with
    people
    5. Courage - priest fights and
    stands for the truth and
    goodness
    6. Strong prayer life - priest
    has the love for prayer and
    sacraments
    7. A healthy self-concept and
    self- image - priest is
    emotionally and psychologically
    healthy
    8. Competent - priest knows
    what he is preaching and doing
    9. Christ-centered - Priest puts
    Christ at the center of his life
    10. Nationalistic - Priest
    respects the tradition and
    ideals of his country
    “ How long does it take? 
    It depends on the individuality and to
    the formation program of the
    ”
    seminary. Generally, there are four
    years to study Philosophy on college
    and another four years to study
    Theology.

    After which, diaconate and ordination

    into priesthood follow. The length of time
    and the type of formation a candidate
    undertakes to become a priest varies. It is
    a privileged time to prepare oneself to
    become a worthy servant of God.
