Adverbs of frequency
We use adverbs of frequency to answer the
question: How often?

Always Usually Often Sometimes

Occasionaly Rarely/Seldom Never


Adverbs of frequency

These adverbs usually come BEFORE the


main verb.
She never eats meat.
I sometimes play tennis on Saturdays.
I don’t often go swimming.
I always have coffee for breakfast.
I usually go to bed at about 11.00.
He hardly ever watches TV.
Adverbs of frequency

Sometimes and usually can also come at the


beginning or the end of a sentence:
○ Sometimes we play cards.
○ We play cards sometimes.
○ Usually I walk to school.
○ I walk to school usually.

Never and always CAN’T come at the beginning


or the end of a sentence:

NOT: Never I go to the cinema.


Always I have coffee in the morning.
BUT: I never go to the cinema
I always have coffee in the morning.
REMEMBER:

a. Adverbs of frequency go before all verbs


EXCEPT be.
Do you usually go to work by bus?
BUT: They’re sometimes late.
b. We use a positive verb with never and hardly ever.
He never workout and NOT He doesn’t never workout.

Adverbs of frequency
We can use adverbs of frequency with the verb to be.

subject + to be + adverb + main verb

I am always late for work.

He is often ready for work at 6 am. We are never unhappy.

We aren’t usually hungry in the morning. This time of year is usually the coldest.
Adverbs of frequency in
positive sentence
We can use adverbs of frequency with the verb to be.

subject + adverb + main verb

.I always take the bus into town.

Jenny is often late for work.


Adverbs of frequency in
negative sentence
The adverb of frequency goes between the auxiliary and the main verb.
subject + don’t/doesn’t + adverb + main verb

We don’t usually watch TV after lunch.


He doesn’t often go to the cinema.
