PROPERTIES OF ALUMINUM
1. 3RD MOST ABUNDANT ELEMENT ON EARTH (AFTEROXYGEN AND
SILICON) WITH 8% BY WEIGHT.
2. ALUMINUM AND ITS ALLOYS ARE CHARACTERIZED BY A RELATIVELY
LOW DENSITY (2.7 G/CM3 AS COMPARE TO 7.9 G/CM3 FOR STEEL).
3. IT HAS FCC STRUCTURE.
4. HIGH ELECTRICAL & THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY.
5. ALUMINUM IS NONMAGNETIC AND NON SPARKING.
6. IT IS ALSO INSOLUBLE IN ALCOHOL & WATER.
7. RESISTANCE TO CORROSION : CORROSION RESISTANCE CAN BE
EXCELLENT DUE TO A THIN SURFACE LAYER OF ALUMINUM OXIDE
THAT FORMS WHEN THE METAL IS EXPOSED TO AIR, EFFECTIVELY
PREVENTING FURTHER OXIDATION. ( PHENOMENON OF PASSIVATION )
8. IT IS EASY TO CAST (LOW M.P.).

APPLICATION OF PURE ALUMINUM
IS VERY RARE AS COMPARED TO
THAT OF IT’S ALLOYS.
• 2011: IT IS USED TO MAKE WIRE ROD AND BAR FOR SCREW MACHINE PRODUCTS. IT HAS
GOOD MACHINABILITY AND STRENGTH
• 2014: IT IS USED IN HEAVY DUTY FORGINGS, PLATE AND EXTRUSIONS FOR AIRCRAFT
FITTINGS, WHEELS AND MAJOR STRUCTURAL COMPONENTS, SPACE BOOSTER TANKAGE
AND STRUCTURE, TRUCK FRAME AND SUSPENSION COMPONENTS. THEY NEED HIGH
STRENGTH AND HARDNESS, INCLUDING SERVICE AT HIGH TEMPERATURES
• 2017 (ALSO KNOWN AS AVIONAL): IT HAS AROUND 1.5% SILICON. IT HAS GOOD
MACHINABILITY AND IS RESISTANT TO CORROSION IN AIR. IT IS CALLED THE AU4G IN
FRANCE. IT IS USED FOR AIRCRAFT APPLICATIONS BETWEEN FRANCE AND ITALY
• 2024: IT IS USED IN AIRCRAFT STRUCTURES, RIVETS, HARDWARE, TRUCK WHEELS,
SCREW MACHINE PRODUCTS AND OTHER STRUCTURAL APPLICATIONS
• 2036: IT IS USED AS SHEETS FOR AUTO BODY PANELS
• 2048: IT IS USED AS SHEETS AND PLATES IN STRUCTURAL COMPONENTS FOR
AEROSPACE APPLICATION AND MILITARY EQUIPMENT
