MD’s Statement:
The fertilizer plant at Babrala is one of the world’s most energy efficient urea
plants. At Mithapur, alternative materials are used to conserve energy inclusive
of maximization of use of pet coke in the boilers and anthracite coal in soda ash
lime kiln. Wind Power generated is wheeled to state electricity grid. Periodic
water level and quality measurements are the part of Quality Assurance System
of Babrala. About 91% of water withdrawn is recycled back into the system or
reused for various purposes.
Waste Management
Waste management has become the part of plant operation and disposal of
various types of wastes have been done as per the guidelines documented in ISO
system and as per prevailing waste management rules. The company manages its
hazardous wastes by proper collection, handling, storage and disposal to
authorized TSDF (Treatment, Storage & Disposal Facility) or registered recyclers
to ensure they are disposed off safely. Specific effluent generation has been
reduced by 11.5% in last 7-years.
Responding to Climate Change Concerns
The company has received carbon credits for the registered projects at UNFCCC
(United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) mostly related to
energy reduction. It is a member of TERICoRE, signatory to Global Roundtable on
Climate at Earth Institute, Columbia University, CII Mission on sustainable
growth. Conservation of Biodiversity Out of total area of TCL at Mithapur, 0.39
sq. km has been categorised under Marine National Park (MNP) and forests
through which the brine pipeline passes and treated effluent is discharged into
sea.

conditions, TCL has restored the ecological balance in the surroundings habitats
by converting wastelands into greenbelt.
Employee Investments:
Tata Chemicals has resolved human resource related operational and strategic
issues in such a way that all the processes being deployed to address them have a
strong foundation of ethics and integrity. In order to be effective in its
implementation, TCL has identified 6 employee segments and their respective
needs
It has identified the needs and expectations of its workforce and segmented it in
order to address them through its HR Imperatives. These involve:
Employee Relations: A harmonious and cordial relation between TCL and its
unionised workforce ensures that issues are resolved amicably and ensures
high productivity. Project Energize was undertaken to restructure the corporate
shared service functions. Besides this, Management Development Program
incorporates customised modules on innovation, new product development,
sustainability, Lean Six Sigma and Social Media.
Capability Building: Customized learning interventions like “Oonchi Udaan” and “Jagruti”
for the workforce in Crop Nutrition and Agri Business, “Parivartan” for workmen in
chemicals, Fundamentals of Finance for CFAs and Distributors from CPB etc. were
conducted to develop technical excellence. It has also commissioned practices like
“Harvard Manage-mentor” and partnership with “Skill Soft” to promote e-learning
environment.
Leadership Pipeline: Initiatives for quality training include Tata Management Training
Centre program, Aspiring Leadership program, Cornerstone Performance Management,
cross BU/Cross geography deputations, job rotations and the job posting program-
“SHINE”.
Diversity and Human Rights: TCL has sponsored FAEA scholarship for four economically
and socially backward children. The major programs addressing human rights issues are
Tata Code of Conduct, Oorja, prevention of sexual harassment, fire and safety drills,
affirmative action awareness sessions etc. • Employee Care and Welfare: “We Care” at
Haldia and “HR Clinic” at Babrala address employee issues and grievances and
enhance employee engagement. Also, a Group Gratuity Scheme has been initiated for
Contract Workmen at Mithapur.
Community Support:
At Tata Chemicals, Community Development is an important driver for its growth and it extends
well beyond compliance. The organisation has established four trusts viz. Tata Chemicals Society
for Rural Development (TCSRD), OKHAI – Centre for Empowerment, Uday and Golden Jubilee
foundation to help implement the community Support programs. Following are efforts of Tata
Chemicals in different sectors:
Creating Sustainable Resource Base:
Tata Chemicals followed three pronged strategy – crop diversification ,building capacity of farmers
and promotion of new modern agricultural system and technology such as intercropping, laser
levelling .Other Activities like mangrove plantations continue to play an important role in filtering
land run off and controlling coastal erosion. At Mithapur , 11 net houses were constructed with the
support of horticulture dept.This initiative resulted in increasing farmer’s income by 20 percent.
They helped the cattle owners by providing quality services for better milk production. Project
“Save the Whale Shark Campaign” at Mithapur has not created only awareness for conservation
of this highly endangered species but also brought recognition of Tata chemicals efforts. TCL also
focuses on enhancing the entrepreneurship qualities and skills among the target community
especially socially backward communities
Improving Quality of Life:
Tata Chemicals has been providing scholarship under “Desh ko Arpan” program to
support deserving and meritorious children. In Mithapur 95 Scholarships were
awarded to support higher education. Under the Desh ko Arpan program, TCL has
partnered America India foundation and government of Gujarat to provide hostels
and improving schooling to children of mitigating families. It has given importance
to infrastructure development. Till now they have constructed 36.5 km of brick
paved tracks in 11 villages in Babrala. They also constructed drainage channel and
186 individual toilets for better sanitation in the villages. They have also connected
the rural poor with different social security schemes of the Govt. like Jan Shree
Bima of Life Insurance Corporation where more than 3000 rural poor and 300
students studying have been covered in this scheme.
Product Responsibility:
TCL provides product information such as chemical composition, nutrient content through
product labels. All packages contains product information including product manager’s
address to enable customer to correspond wherever applicable. As a part of responsible
care they have adopted the product stewardship code with the purpose to make health,
safety and environmental protection an integral part of designing, manufacturing,
distribution and recycling. The plant at mithapur and all packing centers of Tata salt are
HACCP certified. Raw materials are used, handled in accordance with SHE guidelines.
Every year in the month of December/ January advance training for those drivers carrying
hazardous chemicals truck/ tankers are undertaken and TREM card is provided to all
those truck/tanker drivers. TCL also conduct a dissatisfaction survey once in two years
through Avalon consulting for industry chemicals. TCL also engage different stakeholders
through different programs to launch new product and increase the efficiency of existing
products such as it uses methods of soil testing and training with farmers
