Relationship between Information

Technology and other disciplines in

Computing
Computing

Is the activity of using and developing computer

technology, computer hardware and software.

 It is the computer-specific part of information

technology
Disciplines in Computing:

Computer Science
Software Engineering
Computer Engineering
Information Systems
Computer Science

The study of computing, programming, and

computation in correspondence with computer
systems. This field of study utilizes theories on how
computers work to design, test and analyze concepts.
Computer Science

Relationship with Information Technology

 Similarities
 The two goes hand in hand
 Differences
 Computer science refers to the processes used to create usable computer programs
and applications together with all theory behind those processes.
 Information technology on the other hand refers to the application of computer
programs to solve human/business processes.
Computer Engineering

This is the process of analyzing and designing all

software and hardware for a computer system.

 Computer engineering is the combination of two fields:

computer science and electrical engineering.
Computer Engineering

Relationship with Information Technology

 Similarities
 The two goes hand in hand
 Differences
 Information technology involves all aspects of computing and
technology . It deals with the study of how computers can be used
to solve problems
Computer Engineering focuses on:
 Researching, designing, developing and testing of computer
hardware.
 Circuit design, control systems and digital signal processing, etc.
Information Systems

Information System (IS) is a system of people,

data records and activities that process the data and
information in an organization. It includes the
organization's manual and automated processes.
Information Systems

Relationship with Information Technology

 Similarities
 IT /IS uses computers to carry out activities
 Differences
 Information Systems are products of Information Technology
developed which enables storage, manipulation and
distribution of information.
 IS does not necessarily use a computer to process its data, IT
does.
Software Engineering

 This is the study of building software that meets

the needs of the customer on time and within
budget decided on.
 Software engineering is a “spin-off” of computer
science, informed by the engineering disciplines.
Software Engineering

 Differences:

 Similarities:
 Information technology is the entire field of applying in the business
domain, the use of computers, networking, data distribution, and
anything else which has anything to do with the collection,
processing, and dissemination of information on stable
infrastructures.

 Software engineering is the elite version of IT where an

understanding of the underlying hardware, electronics, and physics is
required to assess that the resulting product will not only meet
functional requirements, but also meet timing, safety, reliability,
security and fault tolerance requirements .
