Strain

Definition: It is the deformation

of a structural member per
Unit length
Strain
Deformation: It is the change in the geomatry of
the material when stress is applied
Stress strain relationship
Elasticity: it is the property of a material to
return to its previous shape after the stress is
removed
Linear Elastic:
• For many materials like steel the stress is
directly proportional to the strain.
• There exist a straight line relationship between
stress and strain
Stress strain relationship
Linear Elastic:
Stress strain relationship
Modulus of elasticity or Youngs Modulus
Definition: Slope of the stress strain curve is
called Modulus of elasticity

Elastic limit: The stress limit with in which

material recover its deformation when stress is
removed
Stress strain relationship
Modulus of resilience:
It is the energy absorbed
by a material with elastic
limit
Stress strain relationship
Modulus of toughness:
It is the energy absorbed
by a material till complete failure.

Hooks Law: Deformation of a material is
directly proportional to the applied load.

Hookean Material: Many material follow the

hooks law till the their material remains with in
elastic limit Such materials are called linearly
elastic or Hookean Material
Shear Stress
Definition: It is a stress produced by a force
which is acting parallel to the area.
Shear stress
General shear stress
The formula to calculate average shear
stress is

where
T= shear stress; F= the force applied;
A= The cross-sectional area of material with area parallel to
the applied force vector.
Shear stress
Pure shear
It is stress that is related to pure shear strain.
Following equation

v=Shear strain
G= shear modulus of the material
Here is Young's modulus and is Poisson's ratio.
Stress strain relationship
Modulus of rigidity:
Definition: it is the ratio of shear stress to
shear strain.

Stress strain relationship
Poisson Ratio:
It is ratio between lateral strain/stress to
longitudinal strain/stress
Stress strain relationship
When a sample object is
 Stretched or subjected to extension
 Squeezed or subjected to contraction
in the direction of the applied load,
it corresponds a
 Contraction or
 Extension
in a direction perpendicular to the applied load.
The ratio between these two quantities is the
Poisson's ratio.
