Objectives:
Explains Filipino artists’ roles and Identify their
contribution to contemporary Arts. CAR11/12CAP-oc-e-5
-Enumerate some the dance forms in the country and/or in the different regions.
-Identify the National Artist for Dance
-Explain the valuable contributions of these National Artists in the development
of Philippine dance.
-Discuss the different styles and techniques these visual artists have used
-Explain their roles and Identify their contribution to contemporary arts.
B.E.S Villaruz (dance scholar)
-states that the diversity of Philippine dances, as
“manifested in different dynamics and forms, grew out
of the various contexts and experiences of the people.”
This explains how the movement and choreography
are based on the different environments in the
archipelago.
Philippine dances originated from various elements of
the environment.
Tinikling
-one of the oldest dances in the country
-derived from movements of the tinikling bird as it
wanders on grass stems and crushes several branches of
trees.
Dance performers skip gracefully back and forth while
trying to avoid getting their feet caught by two bamboo
poles.
Other popular dances: Binasuan, Cariñosa, Pandanggo sa
Ilaw, and Maglalatik.
Cariñosa
-another well-liked dance in the country
-derived from Spanish word that means” the loving or
affectionate one”
-this courtship dance is closely associated with the
Panay island in the Visayas region and is said to have
Hispanic origin.
Mindanao
-home to the majority of the Muslims in the country
-known for its spirituality, royalty and splendour which
are evident in its dances.
Muslim dances are characterized by colourful and
elaborate costumes as well as precise and regal
movements.
Their most popular dances : Pangalay, Burung Talo
and Asik.
National Artist for Dance
1.Francisca R. Aquino
1899-1983
Year of Conferment: 1973
-one of the pioneers of Filipino Folk Dancers.
-a teachers, nationalists
-First Filipina to be awarded of the Order of the
National Artists for Dance.
In the 1920s, she conducted research on Filipino
dances by visiting secluded districts and
neighborhood in the island of Luzon.
Her 1926 thesis entitled”Philippine Folk Dances and
Games” has been a thorough guide to many educators
and students in understanding the different dances in
the country.
-she received several other awards: Republic Award of
Merit awarded by the former President Ramon
Magsaysay , Cultural Award from United Nations
Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization
(UNESCO)
2.Leonor O. Goquingco
1917 - 2005
Year of Conferment: 1976
-also known an Cristina Luna
-has been dubbed as the Trailblazer,Mother of Philippine
Theater Dance and dean of Filipino Performing Critics.
-gifted with many talents that included piano playing,
scene and custom design, sculpture, acting , direction,
dance and choreography.
-pioneered the blending of folk dance and ballet.
-her famous choreographies: The Firebirds, The Clowns
and Noli Dance Suite.
-Inspired by dances of the Igorots, the Moros, and
Christians, she produced Filipinescas: Philippine Life,
Legend and Lore in Dance in 1960.
-Her book The Dances of the Emerald Isles: A Great
Philippine Heritage published in 1980 covers a
comprehensive cross section of the inestimable music and
dance tradition of the Filipinos.
3.Ramon Obusan
1938-2006
Year of Conferment: 2006
-Dancer, choreographer, stage designer, and artistic
director.
-In 1972, equipped with valuable amount of research
and artifacts, he established the Ramon Obusan
Folkloric Group (ROFG), a dance company that reflects
the culture of Filipinos in dance and music.
The ROFG performed dance productions and rituals
from ethno linguistic and indigenous groups including
those from the natives of Cordillera, the Bagobo, the
Aeta , The Meranaw (or Maranao) and the T’boli.
Dance companies such as ROFG play an instrumental
role in the promotion of art and culture.
4. Lucrecia- Reyes-Urtula
1929-1999
Year of Conferment: 1988
-dance director of the Bayanihan Philippine National Folk
Dance Company (now the Bayanihan Dance Company)
-considered as the oldest dance company in the country.
-choreographed creative dances based on her impressive
research on cultural dances.
-some of her most recognized dances are the Singkil, Vinta,
Tagabili, Pagdiwata and Salidsid.
5. Alice Reyes
1942
Year of Conferment: 2014
-legendary founder of Ballet Philippines, the country’s
premier ballet dance company.
-dancer and choreographer
-extensively trained abroad at the Colorado College and
the Sarah Lawrence College.
-received grants from the John D. Rockefeller III
Foundation and the Music Promotion Foundation of the
Philippines.
-choreographer of favourite ballet productions such as :
Cinderella and Romeo and Juliet and Filipino works
such as : Amanda, Itim-Asu, Bayanihan Remembered
and Mga Babae.
-her lasting contribution is the professionalization of
dance as a career.
