MAXILLARY

OCCLUSAL
RIM

Varsha Ammu Varghese

• Occlusal rims are wax pillars placed on baseplates which can
be adjusted to record the patients interocclusal jaw
relationship and serve as guides for setting the teeth in proper
position and establishing the proper contours of the denture
base.
• Consists of wax rims attached to well fitting trail denture
base
Occlusal rim defintion
• Occluding surfaces fabricated on interim or final denture
bases for the purpose of making maxillomandibular relation
records and arranging teeth
• Since the baseplates and occlusal rims are made on the
master casts without the patient being present, the wax rims
are adjusted to certain arbitrary dimensions that should
require a minimum amount of adjustment in patients mouth,
Requirements

• The position should be in the anticipated postion of artificial

teeth
• It must be securely attached to the base
• The occlusal surface must be smooth and flat
• It should be contoured to support the lip and cheeks
accurately
• All the surfaces should be smooth
Purpose

• Means of transfer of facebow records

• Aid in
- orientation of incisors and occlusal plane when properly
contoured
- developing contours of the lips and check when properly
contoured
- Developing the vertical dimension of occlusion
• Making tentative centric relation records
• Serve as a general aid in selection of teeth
Wax rim characteristics
• Wax rims are smooth and have a flat occlusal surface.
• They are about as wide buccolingually as denture teeth-
wider in the posterior , narrower in the anterior
• The occlusal rim must be centered buccolingually over and
parallel to the residual ridge crest
• Except for the anterior portion of the maxillary occlusal rim
Iabially oriented.
Dimensions

• Maxillary arch
1.The anterior wax rim height is 20-22mm
2.The posterior wax height is 16-18mm(from the center of
ridge the height would be 8mm).
3.The width of the anterior rim is app 3-5mm
4.The width of the occlusal rim in the posterior region is
approximately 8-10mm
5.The occlusal rim is properly sealed to the baseplate without
any voids
6.The posteriors of the occlusal rims are cut at a 30 degree
angle to the occlusal plane
Instruments

• Wax spatula
• Kingsley scraper
• Occlusal plane former
Baseplate wax
Wax ready-made occlusal rim
• It is supplied as a horse shoe shaped rim, adapt it in the
proper position on the record base
• Softened it slightly, sealed it with the record base by the aid
of a wax knife
• Smooth all the surfaces
Hand made occlusal rim
• Uniformly soften a sheet a hard pink baseplate wax.
• Flame the wax in a Bunsen burner flame slowly by passing
the wax quicly through the flame many times.
• When the wax is thouroughly softened, fold the wax is used
• The other way, the wa is simply rolled into a tight cyclinder,
then shaped to arch form
• Form the wax into a horseshoe shape and adapt the wax to
the record base over thecridge crest area
• Begin at the right tuberosity area and continue to the anterior
and opposite tuberosity area.
• Seal it to the record base with wax using a hot spatula
• Use a pancake turner or a heated wax spatula to develop a
flat occlusal plane
• The width and height of the occlusion rim then adjusted
according to the measurements mentioned before.
Clinically

• Maxillary occlusion rim adjustment

• Heat the occlusal plane former in a flame and carefully form
the occlusal aspect of the rim.
• Catch the melted wax in a paper towel
• Form the buccal and labial contiurs with the hot plate in a
similar manner.
• If there voids fill them with wax and repeat the process
Maxillary wax rim checklist
• The occlusal portion of the rim should have the following
thickness
• -molar region-
