Rhotacization
 To pronounce with an exaggerated 'R' sound
 Some areas are rhotic (Kentucky, Arkansas and
Texas)
 Some areas are non-rhotic(Virginia, Alabama,
Lousiana and Coastal Mississippi)
 Some dialects like to turn diphthongs into
monophthongs
Boy – [bɔ]
 Others like to break them into two syllables
Boy -[bɔwi]
G's dropping
 Drop g's from the ends of words when is
needed
 Only in specific morphological environments
Example: Fixin'
Singin'
Comin'
Southern Drawl
 The drawl is a tendency to use long lazy vowels
 Drawl mostly means that the sounds are drawn
out
especially vowel sounds
sometimes includes an extra schwa

Stage 1:/ai/- [a:]

Extreme instances:
"wire", "fire", "tire" and "retired"
"war", "far", "tar" and "retard" respectively.

"Old lace" - " old bite"
"Red" – "ray-ud" or "rih-yud"

Most common in heavily stressed syllables!

"Hit" – "hee-it"
"Feet" – "fih-eet" or "fuh-eet"

Short "i" and short "e" when appearing
before "n" or "m":
"pen"="pin"

Adjectives are
often used to
distinguish
(e.g., "ink pen")
 An -er sound is often used for long "o"
at the end of a word:
"Hollow" /'halər/ homophonous with holler.
"Potato" -"potader"
"tomato"-" tomader"
"tobacco"-" tobacker"
 H retention occuts at the beginning of
certain words:
"It"- [hit] at hte beginning of a sentence and
also when emphasized.
"Ain't"- [heint]
