Who was Alfred Nobel?
◦ He was born in Stockholm on 21 October, in 1833 and
died in 1896.
◦ He was a very highly educated man tutored as a child in
St. Petersburg.
◦ In 1888 his brother Luwig died in France. And a french
newspaper mistakeling thinking it was Alfred who died.
◦ Later he became rich and established the Nobel Peace
Prize.
◦ His fortune at the time of his death was estimated to be
33 million crowns, of which he left his family only a
small amount. The rest went to the Nobel Prizes

How many Nobel Prize categories are there?

◦ There are half a dozen categories in the Nobel Prize:

How are Prize ceremonies held?
◦ The prizes are awarded in a ceremony held annually in the Stockholm Concert Hall, following the
banquet at City Hall on December 10, the date Alfred Nobel died.
◦ In the evening of that day, there is an awards ceremony and an elegant dinner banquet in the "Blue
Room“.
◦ The dinner is called Nobel Banquet and it is an excellent restaurant for Nobel Prize winners and their
families, the Swedish royal family, Swedish government ministers and guests of the Nobel Foundation.
◦ The King of Sweden (Carl XVI Gustaf) presents the awards in Stockholm to each winner in the different
categories.
What is the Nobel Foundation?
◦ The Nobel Foundation, a private institution
established in 1900, has ultimate
responsibility for fulfilling the intentions in
Alfred Nobel’s will.
◦ The main mission of the Nobel Foundation
is to manage Alfred Nobel’s fortune in a
manner that ensures a secure financial
standing for the Nobel Prize over the long
term and that the prize-awarding
institutions are guaranteed independence in
their work of selecting recipients.
