INTRODUCTION

The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority's (CMDA) another


unique project is the Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT), set up at
the periphery of the city along Jawaharlal Nehru Salai (Inner Ring Road) at
Koyambedu, Chennai.

It is Asia's biggest bus terminus constructed at a cost of Rs. 103 crores


functioning since 18-11-2002.

The terminal with aesthetically pleasing and functionally good buildings


and spaces was designed by a renowned Architect taking in to account of
the future requirements also.

Location : CMBT, Koyambedu , Chennai, TamilNadu.

Transportation Mode : Inter State Bus,


Intra City Bus,

LOCATION

It is located on the 100 feet (30 m) inner-ring road (Jawaharlal Nehru Road)
in Koyambedu between SAF Games Village and the Koyambedu Vegetable
Market. It's the largest bus Terminus in Asia. And second biggest bus depot
in India after Delhi Millennium Depot. Chennai Metro Rail operates a
coach depot behind CMBT since 2015.

MICRO CLIMATE

Thus CMBT is designed in such a way that it is climate responsive with


proper lighting and ventilation throughout.

The main hall that is the commercial part of the CMBT has a high ceiling
with clear stories providing sufficient lighting

The site is more or less flat with a light slope toward North

Chennai is one of the cities in india golden quadri lateral system of narional
highways . Chennai is connected to other parts of the state and the union
territory of Pondicherry by state highways such as

LOCAL BUS TERMINAL
• Shape : Angular L shaped terminal
• Arrangement : parallel single line
• Movement : clear and defined movement path
• Division : Based on route

MAIN HALL
• Area : 10,850 sq m (2.68 arces)
• Roof height : 20 m (65’6”)
• The roof is a huge dome of R.C.C shell
• The dome is supported by a parabolic structure and crisscrossing beams

Main Terminal Building / Waiting Hall

1. Main terminal building has shops, ticket counters, toilets, drinking water
and other such facilities at the ground floor.

3. Waiting hall area is double height of about 20mts.
4. There are 6 entry points on main terminal building
5. Entries are under surveillance.

Bus Fingers and Bay
1. No of bus fingers: 3 nos.
2. Bus bays in each finger: 2 x 30 = 60 nos
3. Total no of buses that could be parked in bus bays ata time: 180 nos.
4. Bus slots in idle parking area: 60 nos.
5. Bus slots in intra –city bus station: 45 nos.
6. No of mofussil buses operated per day: 2000 nos.

There are total 1172 seating‟s in the terminal and footfalls at peak
hours is 12600, so the seating Are provided at the ratio of nearly 1:10.
