TOOLS USED IN CARPENTRY
1. MARKING TOOLS
a) Try Square:
Try square consists of
rectangular steel blade fixed
to cast iron stock. The stock is made of cast
iron and blade is made of mild steel.
It is used to mark the right angles
and measuring straightness of
surface.
Never use try square as a hammer.
b) Steel Rule:
Steel rule is made of stainless
steel. Steel rule are used to measure the
length about 12 inches.
3) Steel Tape:
It is used for large dimensions,
such as marking on boards. It measure the
length about 3 to 5meters.
2. Measuring Tools
Pencil: Lead pencil is generally used for marking
purpose.
Marking Gauge: It is used to mark parallel lines to
the desired edges of a wooden piece. Stock is
the movable portion and can be adjusted at
any position on the stem with the help of the
thumb screw.
Mortise Gauge: It is used to draw two parallel
lines. Its working similar to marking gauge
expect it has two pins. In some other mortise
gauge , one pin is fixed while other is movable.
*Mortise gauge is used to make 10mm
mortise joint.
*Marking gauge is used to marking on a
wood.
3. CUTTING TOOLS
a) Saws:
A saw consist of thin spring steel blade attached
with a wooden handle. The front portion of the saw is
called toe and the back portion is called heel.
i. Hand Saw- This saw is used for short straight cuts. It
has a blade of 25-40cm length 6- 10cm width. The
number of teeth per cm length ranges from 3-5.
ii. Tenon Saw (Back Saw)- It has a parallel blade of 25-
40cm length and 6-10cm width. The number of teeth
per cm length ranges from 5-8.

b
Types of saws and chisels
respectively:
b) Chisels:

The common type of chisels used is briefly explained

below.
i. Firmer Chisels: It is most common chisel used in
carpentry. It carries wide blade. It is used for taking wide
cuts finishing flat surfaces inside the grooves. Width of
blades varies from 5 to 35mm.
ii. Dove Tail Chisel: It has long carbon steel blade with a
beveled back, so that it can enter in the sharp corners to
finish them.
iii. Mortise chisel: It is used for taking heavy and deep cuts,
so more materials removals are possible by this chisel.
The blade thickness varies from 5mm to 12mm.
4. PLANING TOOLS
a) Wooden jack plane
This is the most commonly used plane in
carpentry shop. The main part of a
wooden jack plane is a wooden block
called sole, in which steel blade having
knife edge is fixed at an angle with the
help of wooden edge. The angle of the
blade is kept about 45 ° to bottom surface
of the blade
b) Metal Jack Plane
It gives better surface finish and are
more durable than wooden jack
plane. Its use is similar to wooden
jack plane.
5. STRIKING TOOLS
a) Mallet:
It is used to strike the chisels that
have wooden handles. It is made up of a
hard wood and is round or rectangular in
shape.
b) Claw Hammer:
It is used for striking
as well as for pulling the nails from
wood. The claw face is used for pulling
out the nails and the head face is used
to drive the nails.
It is made of cast
steel.
