Read and analyze the following conversation
between high school teacher and her student
class:
Teacher: Juan, what would you like to be when
you grew up?
Juan: Ma’am, I want to be happy!
Teacher: Juan, you did not understand my
question.
Juan: Ma’am, you do not understand what is
life all about!

appropriate for his teacher’s question?

Philosophy is presented as a study of discipline that
enables a person to attain a broad understanding
and perspective in life trough reflection.

Philosophy can described as a way of analyzing


ideas and frameworks and reflective and meditative
activity. The lesson emphasizes reflection and
holistic thinking as helpful tools in engaging in
philosophy.
Philosophy can enable us to attain a broad and
deep perspective on life through deliberate and
careful thinking, the use of reflection, employing
holistic thinking in understanding life situations and
challenges. Through philosophy, a person can
appreciate life experiences as vital components
that give meaning to life.
What is philosophy?
The word philosophy comes from the Greek words:
philos (love) and sophia (wisdom). The ancient
Greeks used this term to refer to “love of wisdom”
and they soon applied it to the study or discipline
that uses human reason to investigate the ultimate
causes, reasons, and principles which govern all
things.

People who engage in philosophy are called


philosophers or “lovers of wisdom”
At present, philosophy is an important field of study
as it touches upon a diverse array of topics and
disciplines. Every aspect of human knowledge from
the arts to science and technology has benefited
from the inquiring nature of philosophy.
What words comes to mind when you hear the
word Philosophy?

Since ancient times, philosophers have been
pondering some of the most enduring questions
regarding human existence. The following are some of
them.
1. What is real? Are we able to perceive and
understand reality and everything in it?
2. How do we know what we know? Are the things
what we know true?
3. What is the ultimate cause of all things? What is
our purpose in this world?
4. To what extent are our choices and actions
considered “free”?

1. What other philosophical questions have you
asked your self? What led you to ponder those
questions?
2. Do you think that you will be able to figure out
the answers to these philosophical questions?
