WHAT IS BIODIVERSITY?

CHANGES IN BIODIVERSITY
• Alteration in any system could bring varied effects.
• A change in biodiversity could have erratic effects not only in wildlife
or marine life but also in human beings.
• We can clearly infer that when our ecosystem is not well taken care of,
biodiversity encounters changes that may impact human health on
such different levels.
THREATS TO BIODIVERSITY
1. Habitat loss and destruction
2. Alteration in ecosystem composition
3. Over-exploitation
4. Pollution and contamination
5. Global climate change
CONSEQUENCES OF BIODIVERSITY LOSS

• Loss of Food
• Decrease in biomass
• Collapse of Food web
• Loss of Keystone species
• Reduction of ecosystem efficiency and community
productivity
• Loss of medicinal supplies
• Increased vulnerability of species to disease and
predation
“A healthy biodiversity offers many
natural services”
A healthy biodiversity provides a number of
natural services for everyone:
ECOSYSTEM SERVICES, SUCH AS BIOLOGICAL RESOURCES, SUCH AS
• Protection of water resources • Food
• Soils formation and protection • Medicinal resources and pharmaceutical drugs
• Nutrient storage and recycling • Wood products

• Pollution breakdown and absorption • Ornamental plants

• Contribution to climate stability • Breeding stocks, population reservoirs

• Maintenance of ecosystems • Future resources

• Recovery from unpredictable events • Diversity in genes, species and ecosystems

SOCIAL BENEFITS

• Research, education and monitoring

• Recreation and tourism
• Cultural values
NUTRITIONAL IMPACT OF BIODIVERSITY

•Biodiversity plays a crucial role in human nutrition

•Nutrition and biodiversity are linked at many levels
HEALTH, BIOLOGY AND BIODIVERSITY

• Almost all living organisms are dependent to their environment to live and reproduce.
• Basic needs such as air, water, food, and habitat are provided by its environment.
• Although the environment sustains human life, it can also cause disease.
ENVIRONMENT-RELATED ILLNESSES
• Diabetes
• Parkinson’s Disease • Obesity
• Heart Disease • Occupational Injuries
• Cancer • Dysentery
• Arthritis
• Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease • Malaria
• Asthma • Depression
