    A plasma ball consists of a glass globe filled with various gases like xenon, neon, and argon. When plugged into a wall and turned on, a transformer collects negative charges which try to diffuse away from each other due to electrostatic repulsion. The movement of these charges through the gases inside the globe causes the production of colored arcs and streams of light. Touching the globe allows some of the built-up negative charge to discharge through a person's body to the earth.
