Asking Questions
about A Patient’s
Problem
Discuss the following questions with
the person next to you.

 “Have you ever visited doctor?”


 “Did doctor ask you questions about your
health?”
 “What kind of questions that doctor ask to you?”
OBJECTIVE
At the end of this meeting, students should be able
to communicate in English using a polite and
understandable language especially in asking
questions regarding to the patient’s health problem
in the first visit.
FORMING QUESTIONS

• Auxiliary Verb + S + Main Verb?


Yes/No

WH- • Question Word + Auxiliary Verb + S + Main Verb?

QUESTIONS YOUR FAMILY DOCTOR MAY ASK
A family doctor may ask you questions.
1. Do you smoke?
2. Do you drink?
3. Do you exercise?
4. Are you taking any medicines?
5. Did you get immunizations when you were little?
6. Do you have reaction to any medicines or food?
7. Were you sick before?
8. What health problems your family had before?
9. What do you eat everyday? Do you eat fruit or vegetables? Do
you eat sweet and fried food?
10. What medicines do you take?
11. Have you or any one in your family had serious health
problems?
12. Has anyone in your family had cancer, heart disease, diabetes,
or other health problems?
13. At what age did these begin?
STUDY AND PRACTICE THIS DIALOGUE
 Doctor : Good Morning, Mr Hall, What’s brought you along today?
 Patient : Well, you see, doctor, I’ve been having these headaches, you
see, and…. (1)
 Doctor : Aha, and how long have they been bothering you?
 Patient : Er, well, they started about, well it must have been about three
months ago. (2)
 Doctor : I see, and which part of your head is affected?
 Patient : Well, it’s, it’s right across the front here.
 Doctor : mm, and can you describe the pain?
 Patient : Erm, it’s a sort of dull, dull and throbbing kind of pain.
 Doctor : I see, and do they come on at any particular time?
 Patient : They seem to be, they’re usually worse in the morning, I noticed them when
I
wake up.
 Doctor : Mm, and is there anything that makes them better?
 Patient : Well, if I lie down for a while, they seem to get, they go away.
 Doctor : Yes, and has there been anything else apart from these headaches?
 Patient : Well, the wife, my wife, she says that I seem to be getting a bit deaf.
 Doctor : Oh? Well, Mr Hall, I think at this stage I’ll start by checking your ears to
see if
there’s any wax….
