Environmental Management Standards


Introduction
• To facilitate international trade and cooperation by developing International Standards

• Originally focused on industrial and mechanical engineering standards

• Setting standards for an organization's processes, policies, and practices

• 1986 General Agreements on Tariff and Trade (GATT) negotiations in Uruguay

• ISO 14000 created with regards to GATT and concerns for the environment (1992 Rio
Conference on the environment)
ISO 14000
A framework for organizations large and small, in manufacturing and services, in public
and private sectors, in industrialized, developing and transition economies, to:
• Minimize harmful effects on the environment caused by their activities

• Meet regulatory requirements

• Achieve continual improvement of their environmental performance

• Improve business performance through more efficient use of resources


What’s required?
• How a company manages the environment inside it's facilities and the immediate
outside environment

• Analysis of the entire life cycle of a product

• Does not mandate a particular level of pollution or performance

• Focus on awareness of the processes and procedures
